455 value
I'm not really sure where to post this. Sorry if it is in the wrong spot. A friend of mine is selling a 455 out of an early 70's GP. The owner of the car is swapping out the motor tor a rebuilt 400. I'm not sure if it runs, but it has a 4 barrel carb, and air conditioning. I was told the head code was #64 or #66. I'm going to stop down tomorrow and get a positive ID on them. In passing, I said I'd give him $500 for it. My friend said the owner would take $500. Is this a good price? I have no need for the motor, but if I can buy it and then make a couple bucks, to put towards my '65 Tempest, I'll jump on it. Thank you for your help.

Yes, $500 is a good deal on a complete 455. There is a complete 455 for sale right now on this forum by a respected member for $1000.

Now days most guys just start out with a junk yard plentiful 400 block and with all the 3" main cranks available you can build most anything from there. There is a smaller market now days for the 455 than a few years ago, I didn't know they were worth so much now days. A thousand bucks, man ain't that inflation.

BIg difference in the heads. #64's came on the 1970 455 used in the GTO. 87cc chamber. The #66's came on the 1971 455 in big cars, etc. 114cc chamber. Low compression. The #64 heads are sought after...and rare. They are perfect for a 9:1 400 engine.
