Default RAIV Valvetrain Questions

Fellas -

Trying to nail down a few RAIV valvetrain issues. Engine builder did a Pure Stock Drags build on the engine, but he added roller rockers, which aren't allowed. So I pulled off the rockers and found some 1.65 ratio stamped steel factory rockers. I want to make sure I have this right when I put it back together.

I believe the rocker studs for the RAIV were longer than the d port motors. Anyone have any pictures, part numbers, dimensions, etc? May have some in the garage but they may not be labeled correctly.

If I don't have the correct rocker studs, I believe I can use BBC studs; this is likely what was installed on my engine when it was assembled with roller rockers.

If I'm using BBC studs, I plan to use poly locks or BBC nuts to secure them. Believe the ball is the same for d port and RAIV motors.

As for the rockers, I have 15 1.65 rockers and 15 of the tall nuts. Anyone know of a source for new rockers? Didn't see anything on Summit's site, but heard Melling is still making the rockers. Don't know about the nuts.

Thanks

Scott

P.A.W. used to have them, but not even sure they are in business anymore.

I would think Summit/Jegs had them, not sure where at though.

The rocker balls should have grooves in them for better oiling.

Also most use the BBC style stud.
(which is longer than a stock one maybe a little longer than a RA IV one)

HO Racing may still have some rockers also.

John -

Those are 1.5 rockers. I need 1.65.

Thanks,

Scott

Darrell @ Supercar Creations did some research (car & motor are at his shop) -

Said the rocker stud is 2.3" from the head mounting surface to the top. Longer than BBC stuff.

Right now I just have stock D port rocker studs on the motor.

Darrell said I do have the factory drippers, so if I want to go back to stock I need a single 1.65 rocker, complete set of RAIV rocker studs, and one tall RAIV rocker nut.

I'll post a wanted ad in the classifieds here.

Thanks,

Scott

I got the rocker arm coming. Melling part #mrk-532. Confirmed with melling that it is pontiac high performance 1:65. Still need nut and studs. Only other option on studs is buy a taller set and have them machined down if we dont find some originals.

looked up the MRK 532 and found on auto zone as a kit for rocker, ball and nut. But the nut is the same as the 1.5 kit MRK 434. looked up the stud/nut in the GM parts, group 0.429 stud 9796512 and the nut is 546212 or 9422300 7/16-20x 7/8 PL. could not figure copy/paste page

Ok, looks like we've got a rocker. Sent a PM on a member with a nut. Now need some studs. Searched the part # you listed for studs and had a few hits, but nothing for sale.

Thanks

Scott

i had a 77 Cat wagon with a worn cam lobe and bought a single 1.65 rocker arm from NAPA.... 20 years ago. Had it the next day.

Might still be a possible source for 1.65 rockers for future references.
May be worth checking them on the studs too.

Good point, BVZ. I'll check.

Scott,

I just finished up the valve train on my RAIV and between Jegs and O'Reilly's I was able to get everything from the lifters up. You can find most of the numbers by looking at the web site catalogs and if you have any questions, I found Jegs very good at having the answers. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Frank. Good to hear the stuff is still out there. I'll do some research today. Do you recall where you got your rocker studs?

Melling RAIV rocker arms at O'Reilly for $9.49 each: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2359&ppt=C0146

Or for $11.49 with the rocker arm ball: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2264&ppt=C0146

No luck on anything else at O'Reilly's website. I'll keep looking.

ARP rocker studs #135-7101, listed for BBC - - they're 2.350" from head mounting surface to tip and RAIV is 2.300"; I'm thinking this is close enough. $46 for a set of these at Summit:

the original stud I have has 1 7/16 inch of threads on the top of the stud. Those long adjuster nuts need a lot of room.

That is a good point. There may not be enough thread on the summit racing studs.

From my memory, the set up was a long nut, short nut, lock nut and the oiling baffles were narrow. We should have a picture or two somewhere, but I don't remember seeing any.

I believe H-O Racing used to sell the studs, but Ken may not have those now.

Yeah, not looking good - - Todd says 1 7/16" of threads, and the ARPs that I listed only have .850" of threads. Not sure how difficult it would be to cut another inch of threads on each stud.

Other option would be the ARP 354-7202 with 3.00" of threads from the head mounting surface to the tip and 1.930" of threads. Could cut these down to 2.300" but you'd only end up with 1.330" of threads. Cr@p.

Anyone have contact info for H-O/Ken Crocie?

Thanks

Scott

Pretty sure Ken is a member here under his real name.

Posting some pics just for reference.

But - if you went with BBChev nuts - might could use the BBChev studs then too.

That would mean not using the oil deflectors - more than likely. btw
