Default 73 Engine Paint

The paint on my 73 Formula (built the first week fo April) engine has a greenish tint to it. I bought two cans of engine paint from Ames that is supposed to have a green tint, but it's blue, with no green in it. Has anyone found engine paint this is correct for early 73's?

In 73 (march 15th) the engine color changed to a darker color.

Is the later color blue/green? My engine has original paint on it and it's greenish.

1971 to approx 3/15/73 is the greenish color. Rest of 73 was the blue. Sounds like that's what Ames sent you which should be correct for an April car.

The engine may have been built prior to 3/15/73 and have early paint on it. See attached link.

The engine paint is definitely blue/green, so it must have been produced prior to 3/15/73. Ames sent me the early 73 paint, but it's way off.

My engine color looks identical to this picture.

Anybody tried Duplicolor's "Torq'N'Teal" to see if it matches any of the various year ranges colors?

It is "Odd" that Ames lists 3 for the same application
" Classic Industries Slate Blue 62220 is supposed to be very close.
Ames 1973-1974 Pontiac Blue engine paint FN401N, or N182TC, or PN431TC

Vendors that provide an incorrect color for 73-74 are not listed."

I'll leave it Yellow Gold Zinc for that exact reason. I'll probably re-shoot with Pontiac Blue (DE1610). This isn't bad, but it's a bit bright. In person, it looks closer to the late 50's-early 60's color.

VHT Brand SP122 is a match for early 73. available from Summit. Note early 73 is more of a robins egg blue. It may have developed a greenish hue over time.

That color looks like what my engine was painted with. I had the engine pulled in '96 to freshen the insides up, and it got repainted I think with a darker shade of blue than that. I am hoping the DE 1610 will match what it is now, I have to paint a water pump.

But the blue you are showing looks just like mine did, and mine had a yellow sticker with a black "B" on one of the valve covers, and I've had the car since '83, so I believe it to be original paint. My brother had a 73, and I went to use the paint he had, and it was way too light of a blue.

My was built the 3rd week of April at Norwood. Where was yours built?

Also, not to highjack this thread, even though it is pretty old, I see where they say engines 532027 through 532727 and then 532727 and after for the different shades of blue paint. Where do I find that number?

Now just to find that other thread of the blue paint samples someone did and was offering up in square samples..... off to go search.

Thanks,
Pepi

Thanks BWB, that was the one. Hard to remember what keywords to use sometimes, and then you get 50+ results and some have 100+ pages to go through.
