wanted 400 engine main caps
Hello, I can buy a 74/75 400 block that is missing the main caps. If I can find some reasonable I will purchase it. It will need aline-honed but at least it will be saved. My zip code is 44481. Thanks, Ken.

It will be cheaper to buy a 74/75 400 block with the original caps than to complete your plan.

Kennybill , is this block already drilled & taped for the 4 bolt caps?? If so you can buy the 4 bolt caps & have it line honed then you'll be a lot farther ahead by going that route. Plus you'll have a stronger bottom end for your project. The 4 bolt caps are only about $ 32.00 for the set. & line hone is about $ 80.00 at most shops where I'm from. You may have to pay less or more. But it will be worth it if you do.

Using caps from a different block may involve more than just an align hone at the machine shop. If there's a mismatch on the thrust bearing surface it'll run into more $$$ to correct. Unless it was an original vin block for a car I owned I wouldn't think a 2 bolt 400 block missing the main caps would be worth much. |

Thanks for the replies and the info. It was a run of the mill 2-barrel engine. I better re-think this one. I just didn't want to see it scraped. Thanks again for the replies. Ken

Brad When I typed the dollor amount it should have been $ 325.00 but the 5 must not have printed when I hit the key. I to wish I could get some for $ 32.00, but alas that won't be happening any time soon. Also Kenny Don't let it get you down , if you can get a set of 2 bolt caps they will most likly work if you have it line honed. If it doesn't line up absolutly correct it's not that big of a deal to have the thurst area ground, as there is onlt one cap that you will have to worry about & won't cost that much to get it ground so all caps meet correctly. All the Pontiac caps are very close thats why then can sell the 4 blot caps & have them work all the time with just line honeing. Don't let the last guy scare you away from a good project. When I had my 455 line honed for the 4 bolt caps for my current engine it was only out by .006. I could have put the caps on & the crank in & run it just the way it was with no problem. But don't get me wrong I wouldn't have done it without checking & have it line honed but it would have worked , so go for it & save yourself some money. Or as mentioned go for the 4 bolt caps & have a nice strong bottom end to start you project.

There you go!
Rex, I looked at that $32 and knew it had to be a typo - I don't think you can get the bolts for that.
