Default 68 Firebird Custom Walnut Shifter Knob

My '68 Ram Air I Conv. was ordered with the Custom Walnut Shifter Knob.

Does anyone have a good pix of one?

Would this have been the 'GTO' crest style w/4 speed shift pattern

or

The '69 style w/PMD, crest & shift pattern?

Thx

yes
I have the sheet showing it...somewhere
first one I saw in a show was a 400HO convert
guy bought it new,I asked if it was correct and he politely told me
no Firebird 4 speed wood knobs were made so GTOs were used even on big cars.
It is after all a Pontiac arrowhead crest.

The one on the left was with my '68 Firebird when I bought it. BH shows "Custom Shift Knob" (4spd). Original installation drawing shows engineering changes in '67 (although, this is typical as parts were designed 2+ years before a new model).

your car being a RAI wouldnt have been a late production and should have the GTO type crest one on right.
Jurys out on very late ones using the PMD one

I was alway's told that the knob on the left was for '69 cars, and that '68 FB's came with the walnut knob that had no shift pattern, but only the Pontiac crest, as the three speed cars had.

I've got a December '67, '68 RAI 4spd car with the walnut knob option, so should I be using the GTO knob on the left?

Default 1968 400 4spd Coupe Survivor w/special oder shift knob

My 1968 400 4spd came special odered with the knob on the right with the shift pattern as well, but that was about it. as in no power options to make it a nice little hot rod (see attached pics). Original dealer paperwork is included in the attached link.

Thanks,

Kevin-

Does anyone make a "5 speed" pattern one that looks like the Firebird or GTO one?

Would sure like to have one.

This was my understanding too. I have the same 524 option too, but I bought my FB with the wrong knob on it.

The knob on the Left was for 69/70 cars. The Pontiac Crest knob was also used in the 69/70 GTO's with 3-speed according to my GTO restoration guide.

This is the pic I found in my 67 Firebird dealer brochure. I took it on one of the last pages listing the options. This should be correct for the custom shift knob:

I take it as the same wood knob is available for both, 3-speed and 4-speed cars. I haven't found anything different in all that I've looked at so far.

Kevin, interesting docs.

The POP shows California dealer and the window sticker shows an Ohio dealer.

Can you tell me what the printed info is at the bottom of the window sticker?
(doesn't show in the pic, I don't have Meech Pontiac in my database)

The 3 speed knob always had just the arrow on it and the 4 speed knob always had the pattern. I believe as stupid as it sounds your car had the knob with the gto crest on it.. I had a 68 grand prix with a 428 and a factory 4 speed in it. Custom gearshift knob was on the window sticker and it had the gto knob in it. I believe they only made one knob in 68 for the 4 speed.

Default A little more to the puzzle

I was forwarded the following article from a previous owner/collector of my 1968 (also captioned and referenced in the article). I hope this helps for the 4 speeds with the special order walnut shift knobs.
