Default My 71 T/A Clone build

Hi guys!

So Im new to PY, but not to Pontiacs. I've been checking out this place for a while now and I like it here! Now, on to the car!

Btw, its being cloned into a 73 SD455. Hence the 73 nose, rear bumper, engine bay parts, and seats.

The car is a 71 Esprit that I picked up for a song (try 3 figures!... with all the parts!!!!) and has been a project I've been working on with my Dad for the past year or so. A tree branch fell on the roof and wrecked the T/A hood that was on it. Other then the minor tree damage, it was solid as could be, with the original floors, trunk, and 1 quarter still there. It had no engine, so I went out and got a 73 455 to mate to the ST10 4speed. The rear was junk, so a good Pontiac buddy of ours gave us a free posi rear which was like new! I then picked up a nice rust free T/A hood. The fenders that are on it now are the old ones which are full of bondo and rot, but I have a mint pair of rust free ones that will go on when the car is painted.

I have a ton of pics, and will post most up here. Let me know what you think!

Cool project - welcome!

What are your paint color plans for it?

I just picked up a set of 5 Honeycombs! They're nice JJ code 15x7's.

I'll get pics up asap!

Cool!

But, I don't think the code is 'JJ'?
(believe that may be the internal rim code, not the wheel code)

Honeycombs probably have HP or KP on them.
(by the outside air valve, on Rally anyway?)

It has 73 grills in it I changed the nose to a 73 style including the grills. The 71 nose is hanging on my wall now.

Im starting to work on the Honeycombs, and cant wait till they're on the car!

I do love the Cragars that are on it now, but they'll find another car to go on.

Here is a quick pic of the HCs. These are after a few hours cleaning them, and prepping for paint. The greenish looking one is already primed.

So here they are painted, turns out I didnt have enough clear to do them. I figured I'd post a few pics without clear, as it might be a few days until I finish them.

Now its on to finding tires!

So heres an update: The car was up and running, and completely street legal, but I cant leave well enough alone (you guys know this) so I started bodywork this week in preparation for real paint! Im leaning towards white with the blue stripe, but Im really liking Lucy blue. We'll have to see how well my bodywork skills are, if it comes out real straight then I'd love to paint it blue. Keep in mind this is just my Dad and I doing this, not a professional job, but that doesn't mean it cant look good!

Btw. I'm thinking of selling the 72 project I have, you can see the nose of it in the last pic. If you guys know of anyone who's looking for a real solid rolling shell let me know. Its just a plane jane Firebird, but I have some OK Trans Am fenders that I hung on it.

Great project!

Are the Mickey Thompson Indy Profile tires still around? Let me know if you want to get rid of those.

I wish, but when I sold my Monte SS I put the stock rims back on. They were one of the coolest looking tires I've owned.

You looking for a set for Super Fly?

They are very cool and you don't see them come up very often. Just looking for a set - I've got extra honeycombs now so I could put them on anything.

I'll keep an eye out for ya. Every now and then a pair will come up on CL. They were actually given to me by a buddy who didn't want them anymore. They still had the fuzzy's on them! I should of kept them.

As odd as it sounds, I actually liked the SS wheels on the Bird. When I first bought the car it was on four flats, and I had those laying around. I have my Dads torque thrusts off his Camaro on it now, and they look great.

Im hoping to get some more work done today, and more pics.

I've been chipping away at it. Got the roof pretty straight, but still could use another round of blocking. Got the fenders done, and they look great. The deadline is 7/3/14 as its getting sprayed over the 4th of July weekend, and being picked up 7/7 or 7/8. Cant wait!

Here are some pics!

I posted this over on TAC, but I guess since I have a thread here I'll update it.

The car now wears paint! PPG 2058 Cameo White. There are a whole lot of little pieces to these cars. We had my Dads Silverado packed with tons of boxes, spoilers, the nose, and trunk lid. It went in for sealer and high build on Saturday 7/26 and got blocked and sprayed on 7/27. I'd say that's a quick turn around!

I'll have a ton of pictures and info coming up, but here are a few to get started.
