Default Rally 2 wheel colors.

I recently scored a set of the 15" rally 2 wheels. I just got them back from media blasting. What are the colors and a code for the colors on these wheels. Weren't they a silver and a dark metallic?

We use the stuff Eastwood sells. They are silver/metallic grey.

Rattle cans are inexpensive and convenient to use. I find, however, that the paint just doesn't hold up as well as a quality paint shot through a spray gun. I have the PPG codes for each of the three colors involved.

Dove Gray
Argent Silver
Charcoal Metallic

If you want them reply here and I'll post that info.

Masking the wheels for the charcoal is time consuming. Mask kits are available that work very well. If you are painting the JW/KN/KR 15" wheels make sure you get the mask kit for the 14" wheels if you go that route since the centers on the JW/KN/KR wheels are indeed the 14" centers.

Are you spraying enamel or lacquer?

Is it just me or...........? It seems that when I look at Rally II's on "restored" Pontiacs ,they are ALL done to the "correct" original color but everybody's are different?

Thank ya for the replies. Yes, please do post the formulas for the mixes. Why are there 3 different colors? If I remember, the silver is the base, overall wheel color and the charcoal metallic is the center color?

And the grey is unique with a slight greenish tint to it.

Many different interpretations, then you have the guys that like to clear coat them

So, the back, inside of the wheel goes grey. Then the outer side goes silver on the outer diameter and the centers go grey?
I was planning on using an automotive style urethane paint system (basecoat/clear coat) then clear them. Would they look to "out of place" with a shiny clear coat? I could spray a semi gloss clear on them instead.

First is the "Dove Gray". This is the mixing formula for PPG Delstar (DAR) in 1 US quart. There is no code for this one. This one is in cumulative and incremental units.

SKU DESC Cum.(part) Inc.(part)
DMR475 RED 6.5 6.5
DMR490 STR.BLACK 114.7 108.2
DMR400 WHITE 294.2 179.5
DMR487 YELLOW 478.1 183.9
DMR415 BLUE 483.5 5.4
DMR476 RED 494.3 10.8
DMR491 BLACK 515.9 21.6
DXR495 CATALYST 537.5 21.6
DMR499 CLEAR 1081.5 544.0

Next up is the Argent Silver. This one has an OEM code of 8568. PPG Delstar (DAR) in 1 US quart.
This one is in cumulative and incremental units.

SKU DESC Cum.(part) Inc.(part)
DMR433 MED. ALUM. 429.5 429.5
DMR435 CRS. ALUM. 863.1 433.6
DXR495 CATALYST 883.7 20.6
DMR499 CLEAR 1048.9 165.2

And the Charcoal Gray. This is the mixing formula for PPG Duracryl Laquer part number DDL-32947 in 1 US quart.
This one is in cumulative and incremental units.

SKU DESC Cum.(part) Inc.(part)
DMA384 Yellow 20.0 20.0
DMA311 White 44.0 24.0
DMA321 Blue 74.0 30.0
DMA358 Black 224.0 150.0
DMA349 Poly 694.0 470.0
DX265 Flat 984.0 290.0

The Duracryl formula is flattened down quite a bit. And you just mix it with lacquer thinner so nothing to really make it gloss up. The Delstar is very glossy so I used 60% flattening agent in the Argent Silver to make the glosses match each other. The backside and middle (middle not seen once a tire is mounted) is the "Dove Gray" and I left it a bit glossier, only adding about 20% flattening agent.
Of course, even if everybody used this same exact information there would be variations. Gun setup, air quality, humidity, etc. would all affect it.

Here's the backside of one with camera flash turned on and a couple of a front with and without flash. A little bit of black from the tire rubbed off on the close edge when they mounted the new rubber. I need to clean that off.

TA455HO, your wheels look very nice! On an early rally II (code JA, JB, JC, JK, JU, JS, JW) even the back side looks correct.

As the decade of the '70's came along, the rear "gray" color addrd a slight green tint that is unique. My original '71 KU's & KR's are like this as are many other 70's decade rally II's.

Thanks. Colors are certainly subjective, but my eye picks up a definite green tint in that backside color.

I was looking at this old thread and wish there was a better picture here, but the one of the backside looks pretty close from what I can see.

Here's a couple more before tires were mounted.

This one is while they were still wet.

T455HO. Thank you for all of the info and the great pics. This info will assist me greatly in the resurfacing of these wheels.

Try Rust-Oleum "Light Machine Gray 7581" Professional series (Enamel) in a spray can. You can find it at Menards. It has the greenish tint - dove gray look and is a great match. Matched really well on a low mile KU Rally II I have.
