Default Volt Guage Issue 74 Formula

A while back my Volt guage quit working, today I decided to look at it.

I Started by swapping in another Gas / Volt guage. Same as the original, Gas Gauge works / Volts Don't.

Tested both Volt Guages off the battery and they worked.

Checked for Voltage on the plug and get none ( Can a bad ground cause this )

During the investigation I found out that when I turn on the lights the gas guage quits working ( Confused )

Yep, the cluster has a bad ground. Fix that first before diagnosing the volt meter.

Lookin at the diagram I have albeit a 73 the ground also is for other items...cig lighter, compartment light and Rear defrost ....which branch off and go to the cluster

The feed for the Volt meter comes from a fuse which looks like it branches off the brake pedal switch and 4 way flasher

Check your fuses....if there is no power ( key on ) with a test light at the Voltmeter ( plug disconnected from the gauge ) u have a broken wire....or bad fuse

If the dash lights are playing tricks I agree check the cluster ground as well.....if I;m not mistaken its a metal strap in the left upper corner of the cluster mounting screw from the body to the cluster make sure its clean

The voltmeter is in the centre of the page with the hashed orange and black wires..now this could be all wrong cause this is a 73 diagram and 74 could be different...
