Default Aftermarket 5-Speed

I know there are a couple of companies out there selling 5-speeds. Any recommendations on which company to use? Anyone running an aftermarket 5-speed that can fill me in on installation headaches?

As always, thanks in advance.

Sorry for the lack of information. I'm putting together a '64 LeMans. It will have a 455 so I need something that can take the torque. I was thinking M-22 with 3.73 gears in the rear end but I ran the numbers and I don't want to run 3000 rpm's to go 70. So a 5-speed it is!

I'm interested as well. I've got a '69 Lemans with a 3 speed on the floor and the 3.23 gears make it a little annoying on the freeway. Most of the links for various companies selling "kits" and vendors from 3-4 years ago don't work anymore. I'm mostly interested to see how little modifications can be made to the tunnel floor, because I absolutely SUCK at fabricating and cutting sheet metal.

Tom, I knew the floor would have to be altered with the 6-speed - that sucker is big. The 5-speed looks leaner and I was hoping that it would only require a hole for the new shifter position. How much of a cut has to be made?

Richmond 5-speed (Doug Nash before getting sold to Richmond) goes in with the least amount of cutting, only the shifter hole needs to be trimmed back. Console needs to be shifted rearward, or just go without it.

5th gear is 1:1 so a 2-series rear gear such as a 2.73 would be ideal.

Richmond has a 5 speed Overdrive tranny now that supposedly doesn't need any floor cutting except for shifter relocation. They claim a shifter can be had that will come through stock opening. From what I could find out, the car needs the least amount of modification with this tranny.

Ive got a Richmond 1:1 5 speed in my 67' GTO. No floor cutting necessary. Maybe a ding in the tunnel if you have the Long shifter with spherical rod ends for 3rd gear's throw. I had to move my shifter hole back 4" in the seperate shifter hump if I remember correctly. I also had to reloacte my crossmember rearward a few minches and cut the mounting pad on the corssmember and lower it like 1/2". If you go to the 66-67 section I have my 67's build thread with some information on the install. If you find a Richmond 5 used in good shape for a good price I would buy it but I wouldnt bother with one brand new. If I was going brand new I would get the SS700 from Keisler. Its supposedly good for 700 ft/lbs, no cutting and works with the stock console.

Do not trust the companies that say the TKO 600 will go in without cuting. Thats a load of bull****. Its almost a crime that they call them "perfect fit" kits. The T56 is supposedly the best of all of the trannys but it takes a canyon size hole to get it in the car.

TKO is now making a new 5 spd. that goes right in without having to cit the floor. I saw the ad for it on powerblock tv a couple of saturdays ago. There putting one in the olds that there doing right now & said they don't have to cut the floor at all.

If lower freeway RPMs are your goal; what's the point of a 1:1 5-speed?

With a1:1 final drive 5-speed you can run 2.56 or 2.73 rear end gears and still have the acceleration you'd normally have with a 4-speed and say 3.55 or 3.73 gears. Now 5th is your highway ratio, no overdrive needed.

No need to change the rear end gears if you're currently 'stuck' with a highway gear set.

This.

I run a Moser 9" with a 2.75 gearset. Its about the equivalent of a M21 and a 3.55 gear in the extra deep gears 1-4. In the street 5 speeds, first gear is 3.28 and 4th gear is 1.24. Then I shift into my 1:1 fifth for a nice 2.75 final drive. Coupled with my 275/60/15's in back i run down the highway at 75mph around 2400RPM

Its basically like a reverse overdrive tranny

Another advantage most don't consider is drive shaft speed.

With a 1:1 5th your drive shaft speed is lower than with a higher numerical rear end gear coupled with q deep overdrive 5th.

After my Keisler experience, I wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire.

So far I see TKO and Richmond as contenders. I read the David Jones / Keisler thread so they are out. I'm not afraid to modify the tunnel as needed but how does the carpeting fit in after expanding the tunnel?

Others might not care but I do want overdrive (0.64 if I can swing it).
