Default Console

I am installing a console in my 68 GTO. The car had a tore up console just sitting on the floor with no brackets when I bought it. I ordered the manual mounting brackets and they did not come with any instructions. Can anybody draw me a diagram or in some way tell me how and where they attach? Thanks

I did the same thing as you. The "kit" came with three brackets (from PY) and I was told that most only had the two brackets (front and back, no middle)? Here's a few pics I had found at the time. If you look at the photos you will see the location and orientation of the brackets. Hope that helps.

yeah, I've never had that middle bracket on any of my 4 speeds, though a previous owner could have removed them I suppose. before you start drilling any holes, you want to get the shifter installed and center it up on the shifter travel range through the gears, regardless of where you think it should sit based on the tranny tunnel hole. I've found that the console needs to be a wee bit forward of where it looks like it should be or the shift arm hits the console when it's in Reverse. -- that can be affected too by how puffy the rug is where it tracks around the shifter porch. I've heard that Automatic style carpets actually fit better than 4 speed carpets in that area. Don't know how true that is in the modern carpets, I haven't bought one in at least 10 years.

I bought one of the kits on ebay. I was actually surprised by it when it came in. I knew beforehand that it would be hard plastic and was ready for that. But, overall I am happy with it. I just wish the brackets had come with a diagram. If my car was a show car, I would have searched out a close to perfect oem and paid the price, but it is a nice driver and this console suits it just fine.
