Need help identifiing this Bracket setup from a '72 Engine!
Happy New Years (eve) everyone!
I'm working on a "rad rod" 72 Firebird (I had a parts car lying around that I decided to resuscitate) I got this donor engine from a friend who's had it sitting in his garage for a few years. I'm told it was from "a '72" but he didn't remember which car. (engine stamp on the front is 0381215 XH) He gave me the brackets he had, but I'm not sure how this all goes together (or even what car it's from) Can anyone look this over and tell me if they can see if I have all the brackets, and maybe point me in the direction of how they all go? Or if I'm missing any, what the missing ones look like? Can't start the engine until I figure out how it all goes! (The PS bracket was installed on an extra pump I had lying around, but it's the one that came with the engine) Thanks!

The brackets on your engine looks like they may be from a full size and may not work on a 2ndgen bird...if the alternator sits up too high, the hood won't close....
Have a look on your 78 T/A...that's what will work the best on your 72 bird...

Your brackets look to be the same as my 67 Firebird.
Here's a couple of pictures |

The parts are a mix match of '67-70 & 71-72 Pontiac V8 pieces:
-'67-68 or '69 Pontiac V8 alt strap -alum pivot block for PS pump & alt mtg app: '67-70 Pontiac V8 (not used on '70 V8 birds, that's another animal) -PS pump & pulley from '71-72 V8 Pontiac A, G or F series (pulley has two dime sized holes) What waterpump pulley & crank pulley(s) are on the engine? What casting number cyl heads are you running? are you running a/c or not?

Thanks!
The PS pump is from another car. I was just test fitting the bracket. I'll check the bracket and pulleys - most likely the are original from the car. No AC. I don't have the casting # for cylinder heads, but they are 62 on the exhaust ports.

2manyT/A's - I'm not sure I can use the 78 style brackets since my heads don't have the upper bolt hole required for that setup...

the '71 up 350-400-455 '37-63 amp alt/ PS brackets will work on the pre '71 heads if you flip the long alt bolt around 180 degrees. Will have to grind a little off head of the bolt. On the front will have to run a log washer & a nut. Have gone this route a few times.
BTW, I missed noting in earlier post that the front bracket on the '71-72 PS pump is a '67-70 front PS bracket. A 481037 crank pulley & 481039 wp pulley is what you you'll need if running '71+ alt & PS brackets. Get in a jamb, let me know, I ship out brackets & pulleys on a regular basis.

If it's any help, my Master Parts Catalog ties that "XH" engine to a 68-70 or 73 400.

And here's a diagram that may help you too.

Thanks everyone!! I was searching for 68 gto brackets and found a diagram that shows how everything connects. Looks like I have all the necessary brackets, but it appears its going to require the early style PS pump as the later pump doesn't fit. So my choice at this point is to get all new brackets and hope my pulleys work, or just get the earlier PS pump.
Does anyone know.if I can use the later pulley (in the picture) with the earlier style pump?

What are the numbers inscribed on the crank & wp pulley you have? From you original pics, & what you have, you could go either way, but if you only have '71+ pulleys, it would be cheaper to source a few alt/ps brackets & spacer.

As OPH says...you CAN just flip the bolt around...but thought I heard that somebody is making a bracket for that particular application.....

I would love a bracket. I am using older '68 heads on my '78 400, and was able to get it to work with a thin jamb nut, but that hole in the head also secures both the alt and ps brackets and I find the system a bit looser than I would like. A bracket would be super helpful.

If there is enough interest, I'll look into a production run. Keep in mind, this is a prototype, so it's a little rougher than a finished product. Ken |

The next question is whether to produce in mild steel or stainless. Also whether to supply plain or painted if mild steel; stainless would be natural. Ken |

kencar.. sounds like you are new to our thread. FYI, we have one of the absolute best fabricators as a TA owning member,Norwood. He makes parts that are dead on correct ,sells them through repo catalogue companies, here to fellow members etc. I really don't think you need to take this to a shop and get a quote. Just search Norwood and send him a PM. Craig does small runs of 5-10 all the way up to 100's.I'm surprised this has not been made already..know there are brackets to use llater blocks with early motor mounts(or visa versa..) seems like this issue has come up before?? good luck ..

Ken, how do you compensate for the thickness of the steel bracket that fits on the back of the '71+ PS pump?

Doesn't Jim Hand touch on this subject in his book? Seem to recall seeing a picture of a smaller (2 hole) bracket somewhere....

As 2manyT/A's mentioned, the rubber belt will allow for the slight misalignment (1/8") due to the plate, but I plan to add a small spacer between the double crank pulley & the A/C pulley and between the water pump flange & pulley.
