Help me with this block code
I thought there was only supposed be three digits in the block code on a 64 GTO block.
This one says 78XV. I know 78X is a man trans car but what is the V mean? |

Looks like 78 XW to me.
Here is another example.

You know your right. Still what does the W mean?

My guess is the "X" stands for manual trans and the "W" stands for 4 Speed M20.
Experts on the 64's will settle this soon.

Probably supposed to be 78X only, but I have seen an extra # or letter stamped by accident. I have even seen a complete code stamped twice. 1964 78X is a 325 hp manual 4 barrel carb.

For 1964 there was a block code 78XW. This was a 325 hp 4 barrel 4 spd. These were left over 3 spd blocks that the factory stamped with a W to mark them as 4 spd blocks.

X was 3spd
XW was 4spd with 3.55 or numerically lower axle X9 was 4spd with 3.90 axle Most older publications of codes didn't break it all down that far - Saving print space and ink i guess. |

Thanks for the replies everyone. This motor is in my 66 GTO. It needs a rebuild. I think the rings are worn.
Engine complete and running will be for sale soon if anyone is interested. Date is May/not sure have to check/1964. |

standard manual trans was three speed-X if you upgraded to the four speed add the W. What I wonder is 76 or 78 denotes manual trans, why put the x in the first place?

Agree.
I bought a 64 GTO 76XW engine one time that was installed in a 1966 Pontiac Ambulance. The engine had been completely rebuilt (with a 4 BBL installed) and was in the car and had seen service as an ambulance. So finding a 64 engine in a 66 vehicle can happen. Just not the way it came off the line. Tom Vaught

My car was originally a 76X car - 4 speed with tri-power. I don't recall the W being on it, but it's possible that it was faint enough that I didn't notice it. The block is long gone due to a broken crank.

A friend bought a very beat up '66 GTO with a 4 speed and a '64 76X motor in it back in the early '90's for $400. Car was absolutely hammered, but being in CA, had no rust. It was one of the tightest driving and quickest '66's I've ever driven. He flipped it for $2800. X2 on there not being any 'leftovers' in 1964 GTO land.....heck, they couldn't build enough of them!

And they are not always right next to the trans code stamped at the engine plant. |
