Default Honeycomb Paint Number

I am restoring a couple sets of Honey's and would like to spray the polycast side out of a gun. Does anybody know a current paint code...either PPG or Dupont

All the old codes are not working for me

There used to be an OER "rattle can" Honeycomb paint that was a real good color match to factory finish.

There was an excellent article out there by Carl Weaver that detailed the restoration of Honeycombs. I have attached the article in MsWord format

Good luck on your search. If you crack the code, you might consider next adding Noah's Ark or D.B. Cooper to your search list. Hah...

The OER magnesium wheel paint does a great job. You might have to vary the distance from which you spray on the last few coats depending on the temp and humidity to get the correct texture. The article referenced is a good resource and starting point, however, forget the notion of media blasting the finish off of the polycast portion unless you have a whole lot of extra time. Fortunately, it is unnecessary to do so. Just clean the polycast up good and media blast it lightly to even it out.

Here's a few links on wheels I have done. Send me a pm if you want to talk or have any questions.

Well, never say never..... I am working on a honeycomb wheel for a spare tire in the Black Car. I have been blasting the back and inner as time allows using black oxide. I finished those areas up this morning and switched out the black oxide for glass beads so I could do the polycast with the intention of just cleaning it up some and giving it some "tooth" for the new paint. This is the 10th honeycomb wheel I have done, and after having just said forget about media blasting the finish from the polycast I have been proven wrong. I'm not sure if the paint had been applied with no adhesion promoter or what, but with glass beads at 40 psi the finish came right off. For what it's worth, this wheel is in better shape than any I have done.

Never say never....

OER low luster gray wheel paint. Not necessarily recommending the purchase from Jegs, but here's a link. In my experience Jegs doesn't keep OER in stock and it usually gets drop shipped out of California.

Thanks for the tips guys, I just dropped off 17 honeycomb rims (5-15" & 12-14") at the blaster this morning. Time to order paint!

You're a glutton. Order some 3M softback sanding sponges in medium and fine. Cut each sponge into about 6 pieces. I have found that these are the best thing to use to sand down the flexible filler and flexible primer before the finish coat. The polycast has so many angles and grooves....Wearing a pair of thin leather gloves helps. You'll also need beer.

Luckily none of them need any repairs, they're all in good shape just need paint.

I've got a lazy susan out of an old kitchen cabinet that I can set them on and spin around to get all the angles.

Default honeycomb wheel color

I'd go with a couple of acrylic enamel spray paint cans of argent silver (the correct color for honeycomb wheels) and some SEM gray etching primer (spray can) - most auto paint supply stores can custom make a spray paint can of argent silver acrylic enamel, the paint code I used is JE 8568 - I just refurbished a set of honeycombs and they look awesome!

I used the OEM paints and techniques described in the Honeycomb Wheel Restoration doc with great results. I made the mistake of clear coating them afterwards (since this is what they would do for modern rims right?). I had to re-sandblast and start over. Clear coat will ruin the sheen, color, texture, etc.

Picked up the honeycomb hoard this morning & much to my surprise, honeycombs do have date codes!!!

All but two of my 14" have a wheel code of JX and mine are dated in 70, 1 & 2, the 15" I have are dated from 76 and have no wheel codes.

Chris, are there any codes cast into the front (hidden by the center cap)?

Yes. Here's a picture of the NOS 14" set I got with my convertible, I can take pictures of these wheel centers tomorrow.

Are all of the 14" coded JX?
