Default Steering Wheel Play

Another question, please. '63 GP. Steering wheel has 1/4 to 1/3 turn play between engaging opposite directions. Is there a direction on this? I'm assuming it's the steering box, but we all know about assuming things.

Have always tried the "search" feature first, but invariably I spend a very long time looking without finding specifics to my situation.

Really appreciate any & all assistance...

have someone in the car turn the wheel back and forth while you are under it. check all joints on the steering including tie rod ends, idler arm and center link. It could be one or more items that are loose.

Check rag joint 1st. Best advice I have ever been given on troubleshooting - 'Start with the easiest things to fix first.'

After addressing the sage advice above, there is a procedure in the Chassis Shop Manual for adjusting the steering box. ...I haven't done it personally, but I have been told by those who have that steering box adjustment isn't hard to do.
