Default 79 Pro-Touring Trans Am

i had started a build threat once upon a time to the 79 Blue Pro-Touring TA but it hasn't been touched since 2011 so I figured I come back and do several posts to bring this one up to speed. I'll also run another threat on a 1979 SE that I am just finishing as well. I hadn't been on the forum much lately and thought I'd bring it up to speed. I have it on TAC but for some reason have just been slack about keeping it up on PY.

The car is a 79 TA that I got a about 6 years ago. Very good looking car except under the hood. Under the hood, it looked like the engine compartment had been detailed and was really sharp with the exception of the rusty ole 301 turbo sitting there. My guess is someone blew the motor and decided to sell the car. They got the first Pontiac motor they could find and let it go.

I put in a stout 455 with eheads and had her looking pretty sharp. Here are some pics from the work I did.

So you can see she was a pretty sweet ride. The bad news was that she had a couple of rust spots bubbling up and a couple of scratches here and there. So when the motor lost oil pressure and a I had to pull it out, I decided to have it repainted. And when my painter spayed it twice and still didn't come out with the right color, I decided to strip it completely before putting more paint on top of the old. I am glad I did because I found both front floorboards were shoddily repaired and needed to be replaced properly so that will get done as part of this deal.

Here's a photo of what she looked like under the hood when I got her.

Here's a video or two of her running after I dropped in the 455.

A few pics after dropping in the 455

Had her looking pretty good top to bottom...

A photo of what no subframe connectors will do to a T-Top car when you drop a 455 in it :-)

Front end gets reassembled..

And put on the body.. DSE 1/2 height solid subframe bushings installed and frame is welded to subframe connectors after carefully measuring the frame from multiple points

After everything is in the bottom gets treated with bedliner. Home service from the body shop since I still had it on the rotisserie and that made it easier for them to do..

Delivered to the body shop ready for paint with year one flares and hood..

So that is where she sits as of mid June 2014... The flywheel required by American Powertrain, in place of the SD Performace supplied flywheel didn't fit the crankshaft snout.. Now they are building a new one and hope to have it in the next week. Once that is in, the drive train will go in and it will be ready to get a 9" Ford rear end put in it.

The interior is waiting to go in and the only changes are the YearOne BRE door panels and inserts, along with the BRE bezel. More to come....

Saw this in the Lobby. Pretty car! Love the screaming chicken - he looks like he's stoned!

Thanks.

I'm making progress in fits and starts. It's hard to do when you can only work on it at nights and weekends.

I remember this thread! Looks like the car is coming out sick!

It gives me great inspiration for my 81 T/A.

Thank you. It is so slowww to get done though. I have evenings and weekends to work on it, when all else is clear, which is not all that often. I feel like the Turtle building the Rabbit. lol
