I am going to use SEM brand on my door panels, Paint and Prep. I am going to try their prep as well, here is a link.

If you do not use the prep, I would give the vinyl a good wipe down with 70/30 rubbing alcohol.

You need a low-lustre clear coat also, acts as protection and seals it all.

If you use the SEM prep products (there are about 4 or so different steps/products) and after using the black (I use the Landau Black) top it off with the SEM clear you will get amazing results. It's not cheap and takes discipline and time to do it correctly, but is a lot less than buying new seat covers. I have tried Dupli Color and other products due to price and then stripped everything off, bought SEM products and had great results. You will need to buy SEM soap to scrub them down after you clean them with whatever you normally use i.e. grease and wax remover, simple green, etc. You will also need the adhesion promoter, use ALL SEM don't mix products with cheaper or maybe better i.e. bulldog adhesion promoter (some folks think it is better, it might be but use the SEM). Also use a tac rag between coats. Go up the SEM web page and it will spell out what you need to purchase and what to do. I think there is even YouTube videos.
