Default SD intake pics

I saw this at the local race this weekend, the car has been pictured with the intake before but not with the extra carb set up like this and would like to hear what you guys have to say about it. I talked to the owner for awile he has had the elbow reproduced from blueprints and running this set up on his car. It's supposed to be in Norwalk in a few weeks. So if you see an old Studebaker and wondering what it's doing there it's because of the engine. It's been Pontiac powered for a very long time.

Default Bathtub information

The 1963 Pontiac Super Duty Dual 4 BBL. Ram-Type intake manifold casting#9772128/D81978 also known as the Bathtub, was originally intended to be made available as an over the counter street/strip package. Design was to be on theme of the 3 Rochester 2bbl. Tri-Power. The original 9772128s have an independent series of cast passages in top cover along with receiving passages in lower piece. The long passages in lower portion of manifold were to then be drilled for 5/8" dia. holes in 8 places over the tops of each intake runner to complete air/fuel idle path. The top cover also had a 1/16" thick alum. plate with a gasket on both sides to seperate idle circuit from secondary circuit (dual 4 bbls). The 9772128 is essentially two manifolds, a manifold within a manifold. The two holes in top cover supply air/fuel mix to each bank of intake runners of which the two holes feed from the 90 degree cast elbow where the single barrel side draft Carter YH carb is located. One prototype unit was demonstrated in the Pontiac product engineering dyno room in December of 1962 just before Christmas. A number of issues arose from test and project was shelved. The first run of about twenty 9772128s had already been machined except for the 8-5/8" dia. holes in lower runner portion. The factory supported people were issued the 9772128 intake manifold along with the 2 Carter 4 bbl. carbs,a 3 bolt block off plate for the non-use idle system, the 1/16" alum. plate & 2 gaskets and the 2 bolt attached bell crank. Early January of 1963 the SECOND DESIGN of the RAM-TYPE was tested known as D-86585,manifold addressed all the issues of the 9772128 to be used as a street/strip unit, 4 to 6 were produced. All racing activities halted at end of month. There were two more short runs of the 9772128 (20-30 units total) cast and machined. They too were outfitted same as initial run. Refer to Pete McCarthy book pages 179,180,182 and 183 also; CARS magazine,July 1963 pages 28-29. Please note: at time of the McCarthy book project,it was thought a 2bbl. carb was for idle system. Was later found through engineering sources and drawings obtained that carb is the single barrel side draft Carter YH for idle system. As a third generation Pontiac Motor Division employee;Grandfather started in 1927, Dad started in 1936 and myself in 1969 along with six other familly members working there as well, you had the opportunity to meet and talk about shop and Pontiac racing projects from a host of many gifted engineers. My Dad was a pattern maker/repairman in the foundry. Dad was involved in the DUAL 4BBL. RAM-TYPE project along with 1959 -80 engine prototype pattern/casting projects. The Studebaker with the bathtub was a chance discovery on the web one night about a year ago for me, I was compelled to help the fellows with the Studebaker. Up until last year a number of people thought a Stomberg 3 bolt 2 bbl. carb was what went there. The Studebaker represents the only example of the Factory idle system since the 1962 December test! To follow up on some facts of the original bathtubs, they were subject to a bad bog when launched.Maybe someone will post a pic of the floor of a original intake. The was a valley between the two carbs and fuel would puddle in it.When you launched it could flood the rear ports. We found that by welding a vertical plate like a dam would keep the raw fuel from the rear ports. The repops delt with the problem and has a flat floor.I still run a repop on the street in my 6 421 Lemans.GREAT driving intake.Tom

Dimitrie neglected to mention that, among other things, he owned the George Delorean '63 SD coupe at one time; he is the one that drug it out of an apple orchard along with another PY member who shall temporarily remain nameless.

(lol)

It,s great to see Demetrie is still out there helping some of the Pontiac people with his wealth of knowledge and experience. The last time I saw him out was at the 1983 POCI convention in Niagara Falls. He had a large collection of SD pieces, his 63 SD and George. The highlight of the show was when he made a pass with the SD behind the convention center then idled through the show field. Great to see him back. Barry
