The Alpha and the Omega
The orange 06 is mine, the 64 is my cousin's car which I just (almost) finished restoring. We just got it running Tuesday. Had more lifter ticking last night, found the culprit and whacked it back into place. Drove to and from the show and no ticking has returned. The choke needs to be tuned, runs fine once warmed up. More from the show. It was a good sized regional event, about 85-90 cars. We didn't get the Jim Wangers GTO award, but we did get the People's Choice GTO award which was great. There were a LOT of GTOs and a lot of nice ones. Many 64s and many, many tripower cars. There is no way we would have made it to the show had it not been for all the great advice, support and encouragement from so many of the members of this board. Thanks to any and everyone, especially those who went above and beyond in helping with detailed advice and odd little parts here and there. Your help has been GREATLY appreciated. To top it all off, I think my cousin had one of his best days ever. Some of his family showed up and the old stories of this car and other memorable cars that passed through various hands were discussed and a fantastic time was had by all. I'm glad I could contribute to that in some way. He drove the car to and from the show and the SE grin never left his face for a minute. His wife looked ever so pleased riding along in the passenger seat.

The happy couple. Actually, she is my cousin and he married into our family but I just call him my cousin!
My cousin and myself enjoying a moment. Bob and his youngest daughter (one of four). She's heard about this car all her life but has never seen it in running condition before today!

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing it with us - how long has he had it? How long has it been off the road?

He bought it in March 1970 for $300. It was beat. He rebuilt the engine and fixed some body work. He later painted it candy apple red. When he put in 4.88 gears he stopped driving it on the street much. When he got married, in 1974 it pretty much never got driven again. But he kept it and it was complete, even still has the old vacuum stuff for the tripower. So, it has been off the road since about 1974 so about 40 years! It is has been immobile for more years than it has ever been running!

Wow... Cars really depreciated back then In 6 years it had gone down 90%. Very impressed that he kept it that long. I wish I had a cousin like you!

Boy, both of those cars have really beautiful 'stand-out from the crowd' colors. Great story and pics also!
The look on his face is just like a kid on Christmas morning.

Rich, awesome looking '64 and great story behind it. I had forgotten that it was Sunfire Red, just checked to confirm that it was included on my log of known Sunfire Red builds (it was).
Kudos to you! |

Rich, Thanks for posting the pictures! Nice to see you finally got it running. It looks great, as does the Tripower!! I'm glad you stuck with the carb, rocker stud, and other problems.

Another rocker stud tried to come out. So far the "pound it back in" method is working, but for how long? Next I'm going to install a Crane XRi so we can avoid points, dwell and all that jazz. Neat things about the XRi is that it is $20 cheaper than the entry level Pertronix yet the Crane has a built-in rev limiter. That will come in handy trying to keep the rocker studs in place.
