Default What tools do you bring to the track!

Just looking to see what guys are doing in the way of bringing tools to the track. We would all like to bring all our tools from the garage but that just isn't practical.

not looking for enclosed trailer operations, those of you driving your cars to the track or open trailers.

Maybe the Drag Week guys will let us in on their packing secrets.

Rich

I tow with my work utility truck. So I have just about everything I would need except i have to load a jack. I have a box on my open trailer that always has a battery charger, 1000w honda generator, small air comp and hose, white window chalk and a flashlight.

If you pack a long half inch breaker bar and need to use it for anything else but checking the lug nuts than odds I have found are you not making another pass that day! Lol!

Tire pressure gauge and a small screwdriver to change secondary metering rods. Beyond that I don't touch the car anyplace for any reason, aside from adding fuel back to it every few runs to keep the weight consistent.......Cliff

A BFH is all you need. Everything can be borrowed from someone else. The whole idea is to not need anything at all!

any way, bring some tools, and a floor jack, gadge, paper towels, sit down and think about it.
It's nice to say don't bring much, I am glad I bring tools when I go to the track.
One time I was racing [I use to use my ashtray for change] I went to shift into 2nd [t-400,factory shifter 69 GTO] and hit 5000rpm,went to shift and the shifter was jamed.
WTF?, I looked under the car, checked the cable, trans shifted fine with no cable, finally had to pull the 8 track and consule and shifter to remove a quater that got wedged between the shifter and the carpet.
Scarry thing when you are in a race and consintrating on your next shift and sh%t....what broke.
It's what we do...........

Not just tools, but some parts that might keep engine from running. like a dist cap and rotor., especially if you have something unusual...

Our central Oklahoma track opened in 1992. I went to the first few events there. Guy w/ a 440 Challenger had the dist rotor screw up and essentially break in two. Duct tape didn't hold...LOL. He was there w/ the local mopar club, both of them were able to keep expenses down and split a motel room...

Minimal maintenance would be my goal, but things happen, like needing a battery...you'd never expect...

I go to the track to race, not piss with the car. If you don't have your combo well dialed in on race day you need to spend a few more nights at a "test and tune" where you can make more hits on it to nail things down, and work on your R/T's.

The race is made on the starting line, after that you just need to make sure that you get to the stripe first, or at least run hard enough to the stripe to keep your opponent from having the opportunity to get out of it.......Cliff

That's for losers.

You can't drink while winning rounds.
If you plan to lose 1st round I guess that would be a priority.

Consider a few basic tools that can also be used for truck & trailer repairs.

We've logged a lot of miles over the years and have had to replace a starter, a battery, alternator belt, headlight switch, fan clutch, trailer tires (several times). We've worked on stuff at the track, side of the road, in rest stops...you name it.

Changing a trailer tire is much easier if you either have one of the premade plastic ramps or a stack of wood blocks. Drive one trailer tire up on them and the flat one (on the other axle) gets lifted off the ground.

Ok....so add a few 2x10x18" long wood blocks to your list...a very handy "tool". Slice the ends at a 45 degree angle so they're easy to drive onto.

JMHO,
Eric

these lists are nothing. You should see this thread on the Jeep forums! Hell, I alone carry 2 spare drive shafts (1 front, 1 rear), two spare front axles, extra u-joint and front track bar. Others carry ball joints (and hand press - I watched a trail side installation after two snapped). And tool for all this stuff.

Oh, and duct tape! LOL

When I finally get this car to the track I'll drag everything I can with me and hope to use NOTHING!

interesting thread. Subscribed.

The more tools I take, the worse I race. Back in the simple times, we carried a basic tool box with sockets and wrenches up to 1". A extra set of plugs, jack, jack stands, air tank and a battery charger. Won way more rounds back in those days. EZ up and lawn chairs with a color. I hate working on my junk at the track. If it is much over a 5 minute fix, it goes back in the trailer. Now that we have 2 cars in the camp, I will become pit crew if mine breaks.
