Default PRW stainless roller rockers

I finally found out where the metal on my magnetic drain plug is coming from. You guessed it, from the roller rocker arms.

All of them are failing on the roller tip end. They run-out as far as .007" so the insides of the rollers are not wearing even, and some have a LOT of clearance, and basically wobble around on the pins.

They have always had a few thousandths run-out from day one, which I noticed re-running the valves after we broke in the engine. In the past few months I've been getting a lot more noise from the valve train than normal, so pulled off the valve covers today to investigate and found the troubles......Cliff

So are the Crower stainless rockers the only rockers worth spending money on? It seems like iv'e seen bad press about every other rocker out there except maybe Harland Sharp.

...and people laughed when I tossed my aluminum rockers for stamped steel OEM units.

The set of Crower rockers I passed on to Cliff were 1.65 ratio. If memory serves me right they were actually Ford rocker arms. Maybe Cliff can confirm the markings on them.

Steve, we installed them in the engine today when we removed the PRW's, working fine and the valve train is back to so quiet that it's scary!

The engine will be coming out soon, and we'll be getting longer pushrods for the Crower roller rockers, they were just a tad off center when we checked them and need about .050" longer pushrods to center things up......Cliff

I've been thinking about re-introducing the best rockers ever made for a Pontiac-the Norris AeroSteel rockers. Any interest?

Not putting CRANE down, just FYI, At least when I worked for them in the 1980's, CRANE made rockers for other venders.
Example: The only difference between the CRANE GOLD rockers and LUNATI BLUE rockers was the anodize color.

I've used Crane Gold rockers numerous times, and Harland Sharps and zero issues with them.

We have two engines here with PRW's, and both of those engines are showing "toothpaste" on the oil pan drain plugs when we do service on them. I suspected the rockers were wearing out, as in recent months the engine has been getting louder up top, and I just ran the valves on it earlier this year.

We inspected all 16 rockers after they were removed, and all are fine in the centers at the needle/bearings, and no visible wear at the pushrod cups. At least half of them are showing excessive play between the pins and roller tips. I spun a couple of them in the vise with a dial indicator and they are .007 to as high as .010" out of round.

Being that I'm running a "hybrid" set up with tight lash, it's a good thing I got them out of there when I did. I doubt if a guy running a hydraulic cam would even know they were wearing out that bad on the tips, as the lifters would take up the slack as they continued to grind up.......Cliff

I've noticed some slight noise on the hybrid setup on the 474.........PRW stainless are going south.
Like I always say.......It only cost a little bit more to go 1st class.
Should have heeded my own advise.....lol.
Going with the Crowers.

Good info on this thread. Well i had the same issue with my PRW 1.5s a few years back and now my 1.6s seem to have some wear. Im ticked because both sets have 2-3k ,not happy.
My drain plug had the same silver goop like you experienced Cliff. Guess i will be hunting down another set for the 3rd time.......

It's interesting as we have only used two sets of PRW's here, and immediately after break-in when the valve lash was set (both are "hybrid" set-ups) we noticed that the roller tips had some run-out in them that was NOT present when we lashed the vlaves on the engine stand. As my engine continued to get more running time on it, I've noticed the valve train noise increasing and needing more frequent adjustments. It's still pretty darned quiet compared to any other type of set-up, hydraulic, flat or solid roller. Thought I'd pass it on here, since a lot of folks are using these rockers, and if you have a hydraulic cam set-up it will take up the increases in clearance and you may have no idea that the lifters are failing.......Cliff
