Default 455/4speed combo

Hey guys I just wanted to let you guys know I'm changing my drive train on my 74 GTO.. I have the 455ci .30 over and muncie M21 4 speed package for sale on the performance parts sale listing.. I just don't have a place to store it so I'm letting it go... If your interested shoot me a pm and we will go from there. Its a great combo with 3:42 gear combo for around town or low mph cruses. Interstate would need a gear change for smooth low rpm traveling..

I've decided to replace the entire drive train with a roller 455 and a Richmond 6 speed.. It will be quite a bit stronger with the all forged and balanced internals. Just in case in the future I decide to add more bolt on power lol....

Nice! I'd love to do that with mine. Maybe someday.

Yeah it has taken some time and saving to finally make this happen but little by little I finally got all the parts I was looking for. My problem is making room in my 1 car garage to store the parts I remove. That is really the only reason I'm selling this drive line setup.
It sure isn't any fun doing this by yourself but not many motor heads in my sub-division that are interested in my hobby LOL!!! Importsmasher send me a pic of your 74 I would like to see it. May give me some better idea's on my build...
thanks

Mine isn't much to look at right now. I had a 73 Ventura that I bought in 1991 and cloned into a 74 GTO. I had that one in fairly decent shape, running upper 12s at the track, but wrecked it on the street in 2009 (you can see an old picture of it at http://www.southwestv8.com/pics/pont...4gto/74gto.htm). I was going to rebuild it, but then I found a real 74 GTO body, so I picked that up and swapped the drivetrain into it. It still need some issues sorted out, and body/paint work (it will be Sunstorm Yellow, which is similar to the color I had the Ventura painted), which I just don't have time for right now. The car was in storage for most of the past year, while we had a house built. I have it home now, but I am working on finishing my basement and getting our new property set up, so it probably won't see many miles this year (these pictures are from before we moved). My intention is to build it for a kind of 70s/80s hot rod look that I drooled over in high school (hence the "too high" stance and the Cragar wheels). My other cars are pretty much stock.

Default GTO

It is a shame we don't live closer lol... All I do is school and home since I was in a car accident back in 2010. I do love the hatch back versions of the 74 GTO and there wasn't many at all built. It seems most of the 74 GTO's around here were coupes and automatic cars. Mine was originally an auto car with ascot silver outside all red interior hurt my eyes to look at it lol. When I originally picked the car up it was rust and peptobismal pink from a old red paint job...
Now I need to strip her down and redo the paint due to something under the paint causing it to crack and bubble up. The PPG paint didn't like something underneath the sealer and well time to start from scratch. That is what I get for letting kids from the local trade school paint it so you never know what was sprayed under the paint but live and learn and I'll paint it myself this time lol.... Here are some pics before I painted the first time and I'll get new pics of the new install and paint to keep it current....

Terry - that is one nice Ascot Silver GTO Terry. These are the first pics other than your avatar I've seen of your 74. I like the build you have planned for the new motor and trans. I definitely want to follow your progress.

I'm getting real close to trying the engine-turned inserts you sent me, so stay tuned. The 71 formula is all but done - check; the 70 Tempest is all but done - check; and the '70 LeMans is all but done - check. So now I can get the last few remaining details and the engine turned finished on the 74 GTO.

That is a nice car. Mine was originally ascot silver, but I really like the look of this body style in bright yellow, plus I'm sort of recreating my old Ventura, so I won't be going back to the original color on mine.

Default 74 GTO

Importsmasher,
You may want to rethink the yellow.. When I got the PHS on my 74 GTO there was a note mentioned that my car was 1 of 2 coupes painted ascot silver that yr. It was a rare color option even though it was on the paint list not many cars got that color. Something to think about...
The black, red, blue and copper color (can't remember the name lol) were the most popular color's that yr...

Thanks a lot, now I'll feel guilty if I don't paint it the original color! That is interesting; I will have to look into that. I didn't know there were records of how many cars were painted any particular color. I wonder how many were Sunstorm Yellow?

Default 74 GTO

With my PHS it shows the original owner requesting that particular paint. With your car I have only seen 3 now... There may have been a few out there I have not come across yet... I've found the Ascot Silver was a more common paint on the 73 GTO and Pontiac decided to leave that color on the paint chart the next yr. Of course it was on the paint chart for 74 but it was way down the list and most all 74 GTO's that yr the color had to be chosen. It was not the normal colors the factory painted and sent to the dealership's. I guess that is why they mentioned it on my PHS documentation.....
Oh Your Welcome by the way Importsmasher lol....
I'm still a fan of always painting a car you wish or you will not be completely satisfied when you finish the restoration...

I don't know if the Yellow or the silver in your area was rare , but around here it was 2 of the most common color for the 74 GTO's that were around here for us. I had one of the yellow ones that I was going to rebuild but when I got looking at it , it would have been a money pit as the guy I got it from had cut the window reg.'s out of it rather then just unbolting them. He was goign to use it as a roundy round car & every thing that he took out of the car he cut out. Then the dealer we had here that was a 2nd place Pontiac dealer in Niles had 2 silver ones on his lot 1 was black inside & the other was red. He had a total of 6 74 GTO's on his lot almost at the same time. It seemed every time he sold 1 he got 2 more in. The yellow 1 he had had the checker board black & white interior. YAK...... But they were around here in those colors.

Port and Polishing the e-heads and installing the beehive springs this week.. It looks like I'll be separating the motor and trans for sale so I'll be selling the old motor as soon as the trans transaction is complete... Yes the side pipes will stay on the car for the next engine and trans installation.. I've been looking for something that will keep the chrome of the side pipes from rusting. Can anyone suggest a product??? Corrosion is a definite factor around here LOL!!!

Uugghh...Terry, I haven't got to anything car-wise this summer, we are so busy at work and at the home front moving kids to colleges. It IS on my to-do list and one of my priorities, really!, when I get some extra time...someday!
