Some pictures would be nice. In addition to the things you mentioned, I would like to see the choke pulloff if it is original to see if it is like mine.

thanks

A good friend (and competitor) in the carburetor business bought a bunch of these directly from Rochester engineering. They were prototype carburetors, and in addition to carrying the large orange "R", they also had a cloth or cardboard tag held on with wire.

I believe the "R" may (or may not) have meant reference, and was placed on the unit so they would not have been sold. The production units did not have the "R". If this is going on a show car, the "R" definately proves the carburetor is not original to the car.

Unless one can restore the carburetor to absolute "new" condition, aand then wanted to lie about the origin of the carburetor, the stamp to place the "R" on the carburetor would be useless.

One piece of useful information we got from these prototypes, that verified what a Rochester engineer told me years before, was that the RA-455 carbs from 1970 were exactly the same part number as the normal ram air carburetors. The 1970 RA prototypes had both the normal number and the proposed (never built) number for the RA-455 on the cloth tag. Rochester did assign numbers for the RA-455 carbs, but due to the engine being on hold for most of the year, the numbers one finds in the Pontiac Master Parts book were never built. Apparently, not even prototypes of the RA-455 numbers were built, so if one has one of the RA-455 numbers, it is probably a fake and should lose points at any point judged show.

Jon.

Well, I have seen these orange Rs on in the box with plastic shrink wrapped on dated carbs.

These sure looked like carbs sold from NOS stock as they were in boxes with dealer tags on them?

I have also judged original owner cars with the original carb on 69 Judges that have that R on them and have judged unrestored survivor cars with the same.

My understanding was the R was to identify that the carburetor was indeed manufactured by Rochester and not Carter if I'm not mistaken. My 70 is a very original car and the carb had never been off the car.... it had the R stamp until it went into the ultra sonic tub.

My 69 Ram Air III survivor GTO had the orange R on the main body as well. Never touched all original paint. I will see if I have pics and post them up.

Same here - have seen many production-dated Rochester Q-jets with the orange "R" stamp on them. Probably have a few in the basement as we speak. I believe the "R" was for Rochester (as has been stated).

Original carbs usually had the application suffix on a decal on the rear of the carb as well (263 for a 7041263, for example). This would be good to have reproduced as well.

I'm wondering if the R was red and fades to an orange color with underhood heat and gas fumes

Looks like someone painted the R on there. Was the R hand painted, or was it a stamp? Just currious after seeing the pic.
