CHiPs--car wrecks
Lately, I've been watching re-runs of that old TV show, CHiPs, and I forgot how good it was. Watched it back in the '70's as a young guy riding a motorcycle. One thing I had forgotten was the quality and quantity of car wrecks.....all done old-school style in real life...not this computer generated fly-through-the-air-and into -orbit crap. There is a Verdoro Green '69 GTO 'ramp car' I have seen in 5 or 6 episodes that has had vehicles run up the back of it and careen on their sides, rolling over.....even a flatbed truck runs right over the goat in one episode. The GTO never seems to get hurt, but in the stills you can see that the rear bumper is about on the ground with the weight of the jumping vehicle. It must have been very well reinforced. Any time there is a '60's car missing a hubcap, watch out....it's gonna crash. Two tragedies this week alone: a nice '68 OHC-6 Firebird, Verdoro Green (missing the LR wheelcover!) gets airborne and hits a telephone pole 15 feet off the ground at 30 mph, destroying the car. The next day, the episode shows a really clean '70 Lucy Blue Firebird run into a huge tree and completely 'u' the front end. And last but not least, Ponche's early '70's Formula/T/A that he buys, restores, and uses in previous episodes is destroyed in a demolition derby, in slow motion! ARRRRGHHH! A lot of very clean and very nice cars are destroyed on this show, just 'used cars' at the time. Anybody else watching this stuff?

I remember watching the "Six Million Dollar Man" back in the day. One episode, Steve Austin is being chased by 2 dudes in a 79 F150. Bright yellow.
Steve turns down this alley, and it's a dead end! Only thing is a dumpster at the end of it. So he dives behind it. The truck careens down the alley and hit's the dumpster head on. They show a closeup of the truck hitting the dumpster, and it's a 63 F100! The fenders were buckled, front bumper bent, etc. Then they show the truck backing out of the alley, and it's the 79 F150 again, with no front damage. Of course Steve was uninjured, because he used his bionic legs to stop the dumpster from crushing him.

I watch it with my kids all the time. They did many of the "Ponch and John riding on the freeway" scenes on a just-completed-but-not-yet-opened freeway. (Note no lines on the pavement in many scenes.). That's why the same 4 or 5 cars - including that green '69 - seem to be following them all the time.

As a kid CHIPS was one of my Fave's,
However now I see these re-runs and think WOW these Hollyweird jacklegs really destroyed a lot of good Iron. Here is a link to a majority of the of cars used in the series. http://www.imcdb.org/movie_75488-CHiPs.html

They used more than one year of car for that Lucy blue as different pics have different seats, and one car has the fender vents.

I used to love scenes like the 69 GTO where if you looked you could see the ramp mounted on the back of the car.

Nothing like listening to some upbeat 70's disco music while you thrash your Lemans around LA

After the Firebird hits the pole, lands and rolls over the front bumper is mint...meaning they wrecked at least two cars....

Just noticed, that the '67 LeMans is a stickshift and has poverty hubcaps....saw the engine theft episode, and it did show the empty engine bay, also, the engine being loaded was indeed a Pontiac engine. Lots of details in these shows, lots of neat old cars wrecked, all to up-beat disco music! That's entertainment!

And every time a vehicle goes airborne and you get an underneath shot, the driveshaft and gastank are always missing.

Somebody in the You Tube comments pointed out that the yellow van was a low-rider at the beginning of the scene, and wasn't anymore by about 45 seconds in.

I kinda enjoy re-watching these episodes to see all the Pontiacs in there. Not too crazy about all the ones they wrecked!!! Guess I didn't think twice when I was a kid. Recently got my son interested in Chips. That and Dukes of Hazard where my shows back in the day!
