Default OHC with AC

I picked up a complete engine the other day, complete with PS and AC, all brackets and hosed still attached.
It's a 1 Barrel engine but has a second solenoid that only gets hit at WOT. Was that used to turn off the compressor at WOT?
It was an Automatic car but I see nothing that it would do to the transmission and my car's a 1 barrel with stick.

I plan to install all this but use a Vintage air system compressor and box since my car didn't have AC or PS.
I'll be using a Sprint Head, cam, intake and exhaust I have as well and switch it to an M20 tranny.

Arrow IDLE SPEED UP CONTROL

This was used to increase the idle when the air conditioning was turned on.
Having an OHC with Factory AC was a bad plan/design right out of the gate.
Thus the need for this switch/solenoid.
When I do use my air it's like driving with one foot on the brake
The 1966 system is 126 lbs of power robbing pumps & hoses

The switch I'm referring to looks to only activate at WOT. I'll try and snap a pic of it, right now it's still in the utility trailer. The switch is located down below the carb on some extra bracketry below where the throttle cable hooks up.
Being a one barrel engine it looks like it kicks something off. I seem to remember reading a discussion a few years back on the FGF forum that it kicked off the compressor?

Some cars of the day (like my 65 Corvair with 110 HP and PowerGlide) had a switch that was activated at WOT. When activated, voltage to the A/C clutch was interrupted, causing the power it took to turn the compressor (especially at higher engine RPM) to be saved for the wheels.

Likely the FIREBIRD switch, Not sure if that has the same function.
I'm sure our FB folks will chime in...

Looking in the FB parts book it is referred to as an Idle Stop,
And was mounted in different configurations and used on both OHC & V8.

Item 45 on the 6 cyl, 1 barrel, AT schematic.
I think it' what Bill says, kicks out the AC clutch at WOT.

Dunno then, on the 68 schematic 45 points to the switch.

Are you talking about the box in front of the exhaust manifold as pictured?

Might be the downshift switch for Firebird ST 300 2 speed. I know that the 66 A body had a switch mounted on the gas pedal bracket.

BTW the worst application for AC with the huge A6 compressor might have been the Vega 4 cylinder. GM had to use a low compression version of the compressor with an oversized clutch pulley and a vacuum activated clutch cut-out switch. So when engine vacuum dropped low like on hard "acceleration" no AC.

That'd be the switch.
If it's for the tranny I won't need it.

I'll be switching from the 3 speed manual to an M20 with a 3.08 rear posi.
I plan to use a Vintage Air system, should be a lot better and lighter than the OEM.

ho428...you might want to rethink the M20...2.52 first gear and 3.08's w the OHC6 will not be very good off the line...a 4 speed saginaw w 3.50 first gear would be much better and plenty strong for the OHC6

On my 66 Lemans with A/C it would cut out at speeds above 70MPH, other than that the system worked OK

I have a set of 3.08's and 3.55's, along with the M-20, Might could go to a 3.36 gear and split the difference?
This car is basically a cruise in, travel to a car show car.

Here's the pile of parts I was able to acquire for $150 and an old Demon carb I had no use for.
I'd never seen that fan before, I assume it's an OHC AC fan?

the 3.55's will be better but the OHC is low on torque and that's why GM didn't use the Muncie with it's 2.52 first gear and used the Saginaw with a lower first gear...good luck with which ever tranny you choose

I do not believe that is the original OHC-6 A/C Flex Fan, if I remember correctly. it should have a small cut out on the end of each blade, but I can't find the pictures I had from my old 66 sprint that had A/C

I'd be curious on the fan. The car was an all original 60k mile 68 Firebird. Been parked for what looked like decades.

It does look to be a correct FB AC flex fan.
