If you have original console shifter & linkage all will work with the 350T , just bend the stop on the shifter detent frame farther back to get low/1st gear & install the 3 speed plastic id .

Default a nice overdrive 200r would make best...

...mpg, esp if you actually drive this..rmember..eventually the A-rabs will get control of oil and we pay $5.00/gallon gas...200R turns at .75 revolutions at hwy speed vs 1.00 on the th350 tranny..more mods needed..one to the cross mount and a TV cable must be made/installed...but could get mid 20's mpg with this and make long rides on hwy a breaze!!!..haven't done this yet to my 64 lemans 326 2v, 2 spds...that 2 spd just runs too sweet to think about changing it!!!

X2 on the 200R4 idea. I did mine last year; what a difference! Great get up and go down low, and excellent mileage and lower noise level on the highway. I have no regrets. I've even retained the stock column shifter. Works great, except the backup light and neutral safety switch are no longer in "sync." Gotta figure that one out...

Have fun.

Just curious. What is the torque capacity of a 200R4?

I don't know. My 200R4 is not stock. I'm putting a 461 in front of it this Spring.

One of guy's (at work) father was original owner of a 64 Tri-Power GTO with 4 speed.
They changed it out so that "Dad" could continue to drive the car. They installed a TH350 and it has worked great for them.

Then, These people are (one of many) that have done kits for the 200R4 trans. http://www.turbobuickperformance.com/
That trans might be a bit of overkill for a stock GTO but never hurts to over-build. 389 a lot more cubes vs 231.
So you have some choices as was posted by others.

Friend put a 200 behind his somewhat warmed over 455 Olds. Had it rebuilt before he put it in. First rebuild was somewhat normal rebuild parts and didn't last. Second guy said he knew what parts to upgrade and make it better. Second guy was right and it's still running. So get the right stuff. The 200 worked in Grand Nationals so it can be done. And the ratio spread is great with the proper rear end.

I agree. I'll be building one for my car too. 65 Lemans with warmed up 400 and 3:55 rearend. These guys seem to have it down pat also. http://www.ckperformance.com/List/GM...missions/2004R I plan on using their stuff and his book.

What's your rear gear? If it's anything higher than a 3.42 then an overdrive might not work well for you. It will lug up every little rise on the highway and the constant shifting in and out of overdrive will eventually kill it. 200-4r is perfect with 3.55's or lower. Grand Nationals had 3.42's with the little V6 but the turbo would whistle up under load and they would pull hills no problem with a stock turbo.

If you do go overdrive make sure you get lockup working (or a non-lockup version) and the TV cable right.

TH350 will bolt right in, no fussy TV cable like the 200, and your car will feel like it picked up 100-150HP off the line. Fuel mileage will improve a bit, too. If you have a 3.23 or 3.08 rear gear, perfect.
