while I'm at it
Hopefully I have enough info for any of you to give me some advise. I have a 65 GTO 4-speed, tripower 389 YD big car block with 092 heads.
The engine has 5,000 miles after a rebuild. it was bored 30 over. It was a stock rebuild, as far as I know. The rear main has leaked from the get -go. I never thought it was a bad leak but I have gone thru 2 clutches with the last one with only 500 miles before it croaked. The oil is getting on all the clutch assembly and flywheel. SO I gotta pull the motor. While it is out I was thinking about a cam upgrade. I like the loopy sound. What cam do you suggest with my engine specs? Also I am thinking the 2 piece viton seal would be a good pick. BTW the engine runs really good now. |

Lot of good Hydraulic Flat Tappet cams out there and the 389 vs 400 deal is nothing.
I defer on that deal as I have run SFT cams for 48+ years. Tom V.

I feel a bit stupid here, but i have to share this. I pulled my 389 5 times over 9 years looking for this leak. When the block was milled, there was a dip here in the spot shown with the feeler gauge. It was a direct oil path out the back of the block and what gave it away to me was i noticed that the engine leaked more with in town driving from the oil sloshing to the back of the motor on take off. I was always told to NEVER put ANY sealant under my rear main cap, when in fact the shop manual actually tells you to. I put some RTV under there, and never had another problem.
