Not a Barn Find But a Yard Find 1964 GTO
I met a guy at a cruise in about a month ago. He told me he had a 1964 GTO at home and asked me if I knew anybody looking for one. I said "Maybe" and he proceeded to tell me all about it. He says he bought it new in Charleston, SC. It has a 389, Tripower, 4 speed, 3.36 axle and the wood sport wheel. It is a hardtop coupe with Nocturne Blue paint and blue interior.
He went on to tell me he was going to give it to his daughter when she got old enough to drive. When she reached the magic age he said he tried to give it to her and she told him she didn't want it, and "that is was a redneck car". Stupid girl! He said he eventually parked it in his yard where it has stayed ever since. The last inspection decal was 1984. After hearing this story, I told him I wanted to see it, so he gave me his card. I called him today and took a nice drive with my buddy to check it out. After what I already knew, I was expecting some rust in the usual places. When we got there and uncovered the car, I was a little disapointed to say the least. It is a total rust bucket, but it was a very straight car with no body damage. He says he has all of the original paperwork "somewhere around here" and he says he knows where the title is. He wants to sell it whole to someone who will restore it. So if anybody out there is interested, PM me for details. P.S., I already have dibs on the sport wheel if he ends up parting it out.

Man, I hope someone gets the whole car! It's a project alright, kinda makes one sick to see it stored so poorly...

Since I have been told that I have "no skin in the game" by one of the many arrogant snobs of the hobby here, I won't say that this one is worthy of saving.

Man its a shame it has been sitting so long. I hope some one buys it and restores it. I did a 67 that was in rougher condition than that one. As long as the frame is not rotten i thing it would be a good project. It looks like it is all there and original 64 tri power 4 speed are getting hard to come by. How much does he want for it??

What a shame, there's almost no metal left to hold the windows in.
Whoever takes on this project will have to replace everything but the drivetrain, that body is almost completely shot and the frame is likely in the same condition.

I'm finishing a '64 from South Carolina. I'm glad I didn't have to start out with that one.
Too bad that he didn't either sell it in 1985 or park it inside. That is not the best wet weather environment for a car. |

Unfortunately, that's probably the good side. (The top)

As far as "total rust buckets" go, I've see a helluva lot worse.

Yep. The pictures of the missing left drip rail and sunken back glass tell it all.

Such a shame to let, what looks like a nice car at one time, sit out and rot away. Daughter was smart after all.

ReelFun,
Thank you for sharing this find of yours! Although this 64 is extremely rusted, it is still very cool to see this old beast after all these years. Chris.

I don't think that was the case. The owner was going to give the daughter the car while it was still running. She said no. He parked it outside after that and it rusted away.

That is a duplicate of my first GTO, equipped the same, except mine had a console. I bought it in 69 for $850.00 with 60k miles on it from a GM used car lot.
