Country Classic Cars, Staunton IL burns!
STAUNTON, Ill. • Firefighters from at least 10 departments in Macoupin and Madison counties responded to a fire at Country Classic Cars late Tuesday.
Officials could not immediately say how the fire started or how much damage it had caused as of Tuesday night. The business, located off Interstate 55 at 2149 E. Frontage Road, is known locally for its impressive display of more than 650 classic cars and trucks. Photos and videos of the blaze started to appear on social media around 8:30 p.m. with many lamenting the vehicles lost as the local staple went up in flames.

I'm not saying it was, but you have to consider "financial combustion"...

Went there a few years ago. Right of 55 towards STL.
I'm sure there could be a bunch of reason a fire like that gets started. Oily rags in a bin.... Amazing how many ignition sources for fires in garages.

A buddy and I stopped there on the way home from the GTOAA convention in St. Louis years back. We paid to walk through and see the 'inside' collection. I remember that the floors were slick with ATF from all the leakers. There were some interesting cars for sale, but kind of pricey. In any case, a sad loss...

Some of those cars have been on the lot for 5 years, you just hope the fire was not nefarious. I hate to see things like this, what a shame.

From some of the negative things I have read about them on other forums...I would not be surprised if it was intentionally set by someone not happy with a "Bondo Buggy"

Sad no matter what caused the fire. Sadder still if it was intentional. And if it was, whoever did it will be caught.... eventually.

Right down the road from me. Been there several times. Lots of junk on the lot, but also some good cars inside. Shame.

This was one that perished, a 1937 Chrysler Imperial. Took a picture of the groovy front end just last March during a walk through.

I drove by there three years ago. Wasn't thinking about it until I recognized the place from the interstate.
In the video from the link on post #14 you can see a '69 Firebird convertible @ 1:22 and a closer look @ 1:48. It looks like it may have been carosel red. |

Good point. A few years ago I repaired fire damage on a car that was in a warehouse with about 20 others. Luckily the owner was outside the building and saw smoke coming out of the eaves. If he had not opened the door and pushed the burning car out it would have taken everything he had in there.

Very sad to hear. I do find it stupid that the insurance only paid him enough to rebuild of wood (which of course can catch fire again) so then it just blew over like a matchbox in the tornado.
I really hope they build out of reinforced concrete blocks this time. This is just terrible to see happen. |
