headers fitment
I am looking for a set of Black Ceramic coated long headers for my 1968 Catalina. I know Dougs fit, but they don't offer Ceramic coated. For $250-$350, I have found various shops who can do it. However, I am starting to run low on funds and I would like to get this done right the first time... and not sell a kindey.
Does anyone know if Hooker Headers for a 1968 Tempest would fit a Catalina? Hooker makes headers for Firebird and Tempest for that year. One additional question. If I must send the Doug headers out for Ceramic coatings... got any preferred vendors? |

Somewhere I read that Firebird headers will work on the Big Pontiacs because the steering linkage is behind the crossmember like a Firebirds.

FB headers that I have tried (Blackjack "Ceramacote") did not work on my '67 (same will apply to your '68). They were three tube (large center tube) and the left center tube interfered substantially with the steering box. I beat it with a hammer and made it work, but it was a temporary solution. I had a set of 4-tube FB headers and they had the same problem (I didn't beat them - sold them).
RA long branch headers are the way to go with big cars, unless you are racing and really need the extra top end flow.

Doug's or long branch manifolds are it. I tried 67-69 Firebird headers and they did not fit at all.

Update
Well, the headers fit great. On my Catalina, we only had one minor issue with one tube clearing the steering block. Once you wiggle and jiggle and get them mounted, they fit nice.
My concern was there alignment to the crossmember. They don't line up, and we were struggling with alignment issues with the flowmaster exhaust. As it turns out... it appears to be more of an issue with Flowmaster than with Doug Headers, Honestly, I always felt very confident on the D521 headers fitting. Especially since they called out my car, specifically. However, Flowmaster on the other hand has sucked, in my opinion. When I did there online search.... I chose a 1968 Pontaic... and had 4 choices. Firebird, GTO, Tempest, and Grand Prix. I chose the Grand Prix, because they are so similar to a Catalina. Nope... doesn't fit. So then we traded it for a B-Body Cheverolet Impala instead. Still no luck. May have to fall back on having a custom system bent locally. and Flowmasters tech support has been no help. Just my opinion on this topic. |
