How much do Wideports add
I have a tried and true Butler 463 with forged internals in my 10.90 / 6.0 1963 Tempest. It’s very maintenance free and has a set of regular Edelbrocks (325 flow). I’m wanted to step it up and I’m curious what kind of hp improvement people see going to a good set of wideports? Thanks

You are going to need to change the cam IMO. What are you running for a cam ? What do you have for a carb ?

This is a Butler build from a few years ago. The cam is Comp, his grind, 284 288 @.050. Lift 704
Valve timing at .050 open is intake 39 and exhaust 75. Closed is BTDC 65 intake and BBTC 33 exhaust. I have the APD Maxxspeed 1050 dominator carb. Compression around 12.5

In addition to the offset intake rocker arms the need for offset roller lifters. And maybe new pushrods (?). And modifications to the intake manifold for a proper match. All adds to the cost.

You cam is not small. good carb too. You will need offset shaft rockers and you could always get some 1.8 ratio T&Ds like I have. You would get a nice lift increase if you are at .704 with 1.65s.

The heads on my car now came from Paul. Thanks for the reply’s. I’d like to get to 700-725 hp if I can’t find an IA 2 motor somewhere I could buy and sell what I’ve got. Just trying to speed up

No reason you couldn't make 825-850 with wide ports from Paul!

That’s impressive. Both of the EHead 463s I’ve had made around the same thing. 650-660 hp. I don’t see how you get to that number with a smaller cam and less compression but I see others doing it as well.

But I’ll add this, I told Butler I wanted something I didn’t have to spend all my time working on. I wanted to race! I change the oil and adjust the valves maybe twice a year.

Get Paul to open up those ports without going wide and I think you can hit your goal Jimmy.
Too bad about this upcoming weekend, I was hoping to be in Cecil

I was planing on 720+ pump gas HP. But changed my plans to a IA2 block so I could use my Gabby Wide Ports. That cam did get made, he was cool about it. Said he could use it on another build. If you want power like "others" get I would get in touch with him. Guy is good at what he does, proven. |

True but you don't need wide ports to make 825-850 on pump gas

Who has made 825-850 with standard ports on a 460ish ci (stock block) engine on pump gas and backed it up at the track?

E heads, yes you do. SD has a test mule 541. Made 784 HP on pump gas with their non wide port 350 E head.
It took their 370cfm wide port on the 541 to get 825+ HP. And the engine in question is a stock block 463ci. High effort you could probably get a little more HP out of the above combos. 10.8 CR. Still, the highest flowing std E head I know of is Dave Wilcox's 374 heads. Even that is not going to make 825-850 in a stock block-pump gas. Would not be easy with a 541 either. |
