Default 64 GTO 4spd Shifter Question

What makes shifters & linkage unique between 64-66 and 67-69 GTO or even 67-69 Firebird for that matter.

Would a 68 shifter & linkage work on a 64?

I have a 64 shifter w/linkage
and a spare 68 shifter with linkage.

Trying to find linkage for 64 w/o pay $190 for the repro linkage..just something that will work.

Also, what is the correct usage for the mounting bracket, shifter to trans?
64-66 or...?

Thx

the bracket is 64-66..67-69 looks similar but is diff

firebird stuff is very diff

the original linkage is junk..uses clips and slides..

get your bracket and shifter,,mock it up and use the linkage you have, make it work on the bench and run with it..ive swapped sh!t around my whole life...and its always worked in my case..you know..back before i understood what goes to what..lol

i installed a current hurst (threaded) linkage on my 64. i works well and only had to grind a bit to get clearance on one of the bolts (for lack of better word) that threads onto the rod. believe it was the reverse lever hitting the bolt. i just took some material of the threaded bolt and works perfect.

no more slip on hard shift.

Thanks for the advice!

Dad's car has been in hibernation since he bought it in S. Calif. in '84 when I was stationed at USMC Air Base El Toro.
Originally a column shift automatic, A/C car.
Over the years, I've collected some things he's wanted to add...
Tripower, 4-speed M-20 trans, console, pedals, tilt column, dog-house, bell-housing, flywheel. Currently rebuilding the 389 engine and planning to surprise him with an axle upgrade for his 77th birthday
(3.23 saf-t-track). Still trying to chase down all the odd-ball pieces for the 4-speed conversion. Anything else to keep in mind?

Thanks!

The 64-66 aluminum shifter bracket bolts on the trans and has a small amount of "shifter tilt" adjustment with the sliding square nut that slides inside the cast groove in the shifter bracket.

That does allow some adjustment so you do not hit the console on a hard 2-3 shift.
