Default Tire Size

I want to install a set of vintage American Racing Torque Thrust wheels on my 64 GTO. They are 14x7 with a 1/2 inch positive offset. I remember having trouble with the same size wheels on another 64 years ago. Does anybody know what a good size tire for the front would be? I was thinking a 205/60 on the front and a 235/60 or a 245/60 on the rear.

There aren't any 14" 60 series tires that really work. Those 205/60/14's are only 23.7" tall (about 27" was the OE tire height). Even a 245/60/14 is only 25.7" tall.

225/70/14's are 26.40" tall - probably the best compromise between width and height.

Most of these vintage wheels were too light on backspacing and created problems if you tried to go with wider modern tires. I'm thinking that those TT's are 3.75" BS. If that's what they are and I wanted to use them - I'd probably go with a 205/75/14 or 215/75/14.

I agree on the 225/70r14's. You can buy them in redline, whitewall, or black. They fit the wheel wells without mods on stock offset rims. Handling and traction are greatly improved over stock bias ply tires. The diameter is close enough to OEM tires so the speedometer will be accurate. Appearance, in my opinion, is as good as we can attain with a stock-appearing GTO.

Thanks for the replies.. I think the 205/75 will be good for the front, and 225/70 for the rear should work out. The issue is the American mags move everything out a bit and the tire contacts the lower rear wheelwell. I love those wheels on a 64.... they totally change the personality of the car!

I've got 15x6 torq thrusts on my 65. 205/75 on the front and 225/70 on the rear. Any taller on the front and you will nip the bottom back edge of the fender wheel opening. Picture attached for your reference.

You won't regret a slightly taller tire. They fill the wheel wells better. My car looks smaller now than it did with the 215/70-14's. I found this set of torq thrusts at Carlisle for $200! Everyone walked by them because they are only 6" wide. 15" offers way more tire selection. Wide tires are nice too, but these give more of a mid 60's vibe in my opinion. I even sanded the "CORNELL" off the sides to make them look more like old bias plys.

Good luck! Nothing like changing it up with a new set of wheels and tires.
