Shock removal
I had a hard time trying to remove the front shocks for tear down of front end for rebuild. The previous owner had heads of bolts inside the coil spring with the stud and nut on bottom. It was hard to get an end wrench on the head and turn the nut on bottom. Aren't the nuts suppose to be welded inside the coil spring area of A arm?

My 71 originally had j-nuts in the lower control arms to mount the shocks. Right now I have the bolts run up from the bottom with nuts on the topside. Will change it back while it's in the garage.

If they're rusted you might just figure on cutting them off. Suggest using a cutoff wheel if you don't have a cutting torch or air chisel. As AW Dillie said there are replacement clip nuts sold to replace the rusted ones,

Do you plan on saving the shocks? If not just break the top off. Put a deep well 9/16 socket over the top nut with a 2-3' long extension and just flex it back and forth towards the firewall then the front of the car a few times. The shaft will break right at the upper rubber shock bushing. AC cars will interfere with this process. I bet I've changed over a hundred shocks like this in the 80's when I was working at the Old's dealership. I could do a set of front shocks in about 20 minutes with the car on the lift.

Thanks for the replies. I see there are suppose to be that special clip on nut which was never used. I will get a new set when I install new shocks.

A couple of years ago I replaced all 4 shocks with new Bilsteins. Great units, by the way. I used a small cutoff wheel on the front nuts as Brad mentioned above (real small - it was a for a Dremel). Worked like a champ!
