Default FUEL TANK PAD????

In the 1965 shop manual, I do not see any reference to an upper fuel tank pad going against the trunk floor or insulators on the straps. Did the cars come with any insulation on the fuel tank?

Default FWIW...

Looking at the '66 manual there is mention of the noise insulation pad in the very last paragraph as an "add if needed".
I have found this pad on several parts/project cars in the past '66 & '67 but not all.
I don't recall any having this on the straps.
So can't say they all came with it.

May apply for '65 as well?

My 65's had them. It was glued to the bottom of the trunk floor sorta random. Looked like the assembly line guy just had it in the palm of his hand and slapped it on. Close apparently was good enough.

Today I installed my new fuel gauge sender after having to get a new locking ring. I had the one that came with the tank some 15 yrs ago on a cork board and fairly recently put it somewhere else, I know not where. I then got side tracked putting my tailpipes on. However, I did notice today that the location on the underside trunk floor where the tank indexes for the straps, is raised slightly higher than the rest of the trunk floor. The tank has a recess that indexes on the raised portion. I believe the tank only makes contact with the floor in these locations. I will further examine tomorrow.

On a tank side note, I was researching whether people painted their tanks. Some do, but I believe they are zinc coated . One gentleman on here had the best idea, he said wax it, at least the underside every 6 months or so.

Original tanks were galvanized. 30 years ago there was a company in Texas that would do that. I shipped mine there. A little expensive then. Probably a lot expensive now!!!

"Bill"!

Side note: I used 2" live rubber squares at the 4 points you are talking about.. They are still there today. Also used the same live rubber on the straps but trimmed it narrow enough you can barely see it if you look hard enough..

I clear-coated mine. Still looks good several years later...and I live on a dirt road. De-grease first as they come with some type of oily coating on them.

I used the asphalt strips for concrete expansion joints when I installed the tank in my Chevelle.

Thanks for the info Keith, My tank did not have the pad so I think I will use the asphalt strips like you did.

This is the tank out of my all original 65 Tempest with 36k miles. Not sure that these two small strips are considered tank pads or not. I’ve yet to find these in any catalog. I know Ames sell a whole tank pad but was looking for something similar to the original. Speedway motors sell this for Nova and Chevelle. Looks like would work for our tanks

Default 65 tank pad.

My car had one. Got a replacement from Year one a few years ago.

Speedway seems to have a lot of parts for Chevelles that would work well on my resto-fied 64 GTO. Thanks.

I was correct that the contact points on the trunk floor are raised so the tank top does not touch the trunk floor. I decided to just wax my tank and then install it with no additional
pads or insulation. Once the straps are done up the tank is secured to the trunk floor by the straps. The contact patch is only on the 2 raised channels on the underside of the trunk. I think I will need to get some longer carriage bolts.(originals are 3/8 by 3 1/2). Another member posted that it is tricky to get the strap ends to engage the bolts especially if doing the install solo.

True. The first one, I wrestled with until I got the nuts started. The second one, I bought longer bolts and cut them off after I got them installed.

Must have been your old post I read Greg. I got 6 1/2" carriage bolts and it was perfect for getting nuts started on straps. i cut about 2 " off when she was cinched up. Went smoothly.
I also got my tail pipes on and adjusted. Now I need to recuperate. I bought my tank and exhaust system some 15 yrs ago near when I got the car. I am going for completion this time.
If I wait any longer I will physically not be able to do it. I never knew what getting old was like. I don't farm any work out so it is just me on the hook.
