Default Nylon Teeth Timing chains

Anyone know the year the factory stated using the nylon tooth timing gears?

Not sure, but if you pull out all the spark plug and remove the Dizzy cap how far can you spin the Balancer before the Dizzy rotor moves?
If that movement is close to 1/2" then the question as to what type of Cam gear is in the motor is a moot point as it's plain just time to replace the gears and chain.

Thanks Steve,
I do that test often but not what I was asking...
Looking as to what year they started doing the nylon teeth.

I'm almost certain everyone in the GM family started using them in 1964, including Pontiac. I know Chevrolets and Buicks had them back that far, and don't see why Olds or Pontiac would be different.

My 64 GTO, all original when I bought in 69, had a nylon tooth gear.

They were still using 'em in '69. My '69 RA3 GTO had one. Didn't last 50k miles.

The one on my 69 GP let loose at around 70 mph on a suburban Chicago freeway during rush hour....about 55-60k miles. Not good!

Two things. What is a "dizzy"? and Double roller chain & gears is a must in a Pontiac. Nylon gears make interesting garage art.

For whatever reason the olds, buick, and chevy counterparts seemed to be able to keep nylon toothed gears a bunch more miles than Pontiac did before they went toothless. I've seen Pontiacs bad at 30,000 miles and every once in awhile they'd make it over 60,000, not usually though. I've seen chevy especially, make it near 100,000 miles before they failed.

I had always heard that the factories used nylon gears in an effort to mute engine noise, although I've never noticed any excessive noise after switching to steel sets. The GM hardened 4 cylinder Pontiac chain used in a V8 was the standard performance setup for many years before the aftermarket saw fit to produce better timing components for the Stratostreak V8.

At one time some of the top engine builders of chevys were using nylon gears in an effort to stop harmonics between the cam and crank, that seemed to go out of favor quickly though.

Only good wall art if the nylon is still there!

Yes, back in the 80's I blew up my motor then found a friend with a 69' Firebird & 350.
I put the motor in while my other was out.
It had that nylon gear...think that was first time I saw that and found pieces in the pan...I replaced it.

Fast forward to now...I got a all original 67' GP w/ 73K so the thoughts of that gear is in mind so out comes the camera!

I changed thetiming gears/chain in my 77 T/A at about 60,000 because I had read so much about the nylon gear fiasco....

My 77 T/A engine was the el cheapo'est of all the 400's , has the "hub" balancer, 6X-8 heads. I figured my engine would have the cheapest timing stuff also....not so.

It had an iron top gear. THe chain had some slop, so I changed it all out...

Although off topic, so I wonder when they QUIT using nylon gears...of course 77 was supposedly the last year 400's were made, I've read that Pontiac stockpiled a bunch of 400's to use in 78 and 79, THEN it was like the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor, it WAS over!!!

The 403 Olds in my 79 TA had an intact nylon tooth timing gear, so they used them at least up to that point.

It's been hashed over a few times on this forum, and right around 71-72 is as near as I've seen documented of when Pontiac made the switch back to steel upper gears.

The chebby gears lasted longer because all their cam lobes were gone.
