Default Glueing dash veneer?

My buddy has a 66 GTO. He bought the dash veneer had it stained the right color. Problem is neither of us know what glue to use. Also how do we clamp it so the veneer sticks everywhere with out lifting? i thought of a dowel in between the gauges and c clamps but i/we dont want to mess this up.He spent some serious cash on getting the right veneer and color to match.

Thanks as always Joe

DON'T use the brown colored Gorilla glue as it expands. Ask me how I know!

Default veneer

DON'T use the brown colored Gorilla glue as it expands. Ask me how I know! But after gluing I used large mechanic sockets of various sizes to weight it down.

Was thinking of using the gorilla glue (clear) wonder if that expands as well?

Last time I used the clear it did expand. Thankfully not on my GTO.

I was told to use 3M™ Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive... the best you can get. Spray the dash insert and the wood. Let them dry and then apply the wood panel. Just make sure you align it they way you want, as once together it's almost impossible to adjust. You can weight the wood veneer down to make sure it's all stuck and flat.

Another that might work... but you'll have to smooth out what you apply leaving no lumps.... is DAP's Strong Stik. I comes in a squeeze tube. I've used it on a few things, including on a band clam to keep the tailpipe and muffler together. That was last Fall and until I used this stuff they'd slip apart. They're still together and haven't moved a bit. It's powerful stuff, just like it says on the tube.

Got a friend that had made a metal insert, works great. He might have a few left.

Thankz for the input guys. As Gm has always used 3M products was hoping someone would have the correct glue used in the factory. OPG sells the metal insert as well. Never had much luck of anything sticking to aluminum for very long. Missing some pieces and under the missing veneer is like a lumpy textured plastic that it's glued to. That has me wondering if the glue is like rubber cement or a glue you would have to put on pretty thick. Getting close to pulling the GTO out for the 1st time this year. Need to make a choice N STICK to it.....pardon the pun.

After having problems with the adhesive backed vinyl woodgrain on my '68, the last time I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive. It doesn't let go easily. It looks identical to the remaining old glue that was on the original instrument panel I used.

Thanks Greg, that is good to know.

As anther test of DAP's Strong Stik, I used it to glue the headliner fabric back in place on the driver's side right in front of me. As far as I can see it will never come loose again. It's strong like moose. LOL

Thankz, I've had another suggestion to use DAP as well.
