Default Hydraulic Roller Lifters Thoughts

Lunati HR cam - see card
Comp Rockers 7/16, 1.6:1) - P/N #1332-16

From what I’ve read here - Crower and the Comp 857S have been getting lots of praise, but Lunati / Morel not so much

It has been posted that the Shaver made CC 857-16 lifters are the only lifters which have the Pontiac oil band location.

Paul Carter has posted that he likes the Hylift Johnson lifters. With these, he grinds a groove about 1/4" down from the oil hole in the lifter bore, to connect it with the lower Chevy oil band location.

I have about 10 years on a set of the Comps with about .030 more lift, and 4 degrees at .050 less cam than that. Not a recommendation necessarily, just sharing my experience. Hopefully someone who builds a lot of engines will be along with experience of what's the best today.

If you have the wallet for them the Isky brand Endurance plus lifters will last a life time in a semi race motor .

Do the different lifters require different push rods ? For example the CC 857 vs Lunati #72334. The Lunati's are what's currently in the motor and being replaced

I have checked as I run lunati lifters as well. The seat height on the lunati lifters is 2.71" while the comp lifter has a seat height of 2.49" You're going to need to recheck valvetrain geometry and likely will need a different push-rod when making the change.

It's really the only reason I haven't changed mine out. Driving around I don't seem to have issues with my lunati lifters, but at hot idle when oil pressure falls to about 12-15psi they start clattering.

I have not had any longevity issues with the lunati's though. About 15000 miles on them at this point.

Do the heads need to come off when removing any of these lifters or just the intake ?

Nothing more confusing right now than sorting through the recommendations and complaints of the roller lifters. Seems to be a lot of complaints on Lunati, but our GTO club has exactly the opposite findings. Lunati's have been the replacement lifters in two builds that had noise problems and they are quiet in those engines. There are two more engines originally fitted with Lunati's and they are quiet also.

I've put together three engines where the new Comps had tickers and had to be replaced. The good news is Butler and Comp did full replacements with no hassle; the bad news is it is still a pain to dig them out and replace them. At least all three replacement Comp sets were dead quiet.

I've seen two extremely noisy sets of Crane from a couple years ago, but can't say about their current HR lifters that look to have different bodies. One of these clacking sets is in my blue GTO, and I am waiting for the holy grail of HR lifters to come along before replacing them. Guess I paid extra for the noise.

I've done Paul's groove addition to four blocks. Two are in progress and the other have quiet Comp lifters. What I can't say is possibly the lifters might have been quiet without the alteration. Waiting to see about the next two engines when the hit the road. Another block that we grooved is going to receive the set of the clacking Crane lifters that were removed and replaced with a set of quiet Lunati's. This will be a pretty good test to see if the Cranes were noisy because of the oil band, or just made crappy.

Has anyone run a set of Crower HR lifters? I can't find any record on them either good or bad, but thinking I might go with them if there are no negative reports. While the Cranes are noisy, they perform excellent and we have dyno runs up to 6,700 RPM with a rock solid readout. It's just embarrassing when leaving a car show with the lifters clacking away.

Update - Got the Comp 857's after speaking to Comp directly and was told that Shaver was now the sole supplier of these lifters. Anyway, got them from Summit and confirmed that the band is in the correct place (thanks Tom). Started pulling the Lunati lifters and one was clearly on the path to failure. Assume will probably have to replace the cam too. Will also open up the oil filter to if any metal inside it.

This could have been a real mess

Maybe the picture is playing tricks on me but is a chunk of the body missing?

Also does that roller appear flattened a bit and pitted??

If so, most likely cam replacement is in order, I doubt that lobe survived if that roller is egg shaped and pitted.

Yes on both. Cam will be coming out. Will probably stick with same Lunati grind
