Does anyone know the story on what happened?

I found it. It's that Minnesota car that hit a telephone pole. I remember reading about this several years ago. That's a shame and from the looks of it, a miracle the driver survived.

I have seen / investigated collisions with much less damage where the driver did not survive, even with air bags and lap / shoulder seat belts. Compound leg fractures noted to the driver by a first responder. Passenger compartment on the driver's side heavily compromised so I expect there was a long road to recovery for the driver and any other occupants. Not much of the vehicle left to salvage there. |

Wow, must have been ripping pretty good to twist her like that. Luck driver lived through that offset hit. Crazy and most of us have been there done that. Fortunately my last one (passenger) was in a 68 stang we bent in half hitting an Oak. Still have issues from that hit.

That picture was taken by John Robinson AKA GTO JOHN about a decade ago. He is no longer active on the forum.

When I was a tow truck driver in the late 70's to early 80's I worked the graveyard shifts over the weekend. The carnage by idiots in old musclecars was constant. Every week there were guys slamming these type of cars into overpasses, ditches, poles and of course other cars. 60's cars fold up like empty aluminum beer cans compared to modern cars. And back then most of the ones were rusted out after 10 years in the northeast so they were even worse. Booze and drugs was a factor in about 95% percent of the wrecks I towed.

I think most of us have seen this video before - but the difference between the survivability of a crash between these two vehicles is pretty stark. One would naturally think the larger, heavier, older car would win this contest, but technology and engineering changes everything.

My home town newspaper recently ran a similar photo of a 1969 Judge in their "50 years ago" column, from a story back in 1970. A local kid and his friend hit a bridge abutment at high speed, but in that case they didn't survive.

Damn! It's so crumpled I can't cut the cowl and VIN out and graft it into a Lemans!

That's exactly right. He was local to it and I remember him posting it. Been quite a while ago, I guessed about 10 years ago also.
