mufflers for a 1967 GTO
I know there are a lot of post about exhaust and mufflers but nothing that answered my question. So I would like to put new mufflers on my GTO. I have 2.5" exhaust pipes. I currently have mufflers from Summit that I do not like. I want mufflers that have little to no drone and that have a nice sound to them but not too loud especially when going down the highway at 70 mph or 2800 rpm's.
Thank you Alan |

Alan, shoot a picture under the car to show what you have now and what size they are and what configuration they are (inlet offset, outlet offset, etc.)

It's quieter than the Ultra Flo, but far from silent at wide open throttle... https://www.dynomax.com/mufflers/sup...set-17926.html This is what I have on my '64 convertible and I opted for the Super Turbo vs the Ultra Flo to make sure I could hear my stereo while driving on the highway with the top down. |

I have the Walker DynoMax Super Turbo - 17749 Mufflers but it is time to test out Tom Hand's VOE system on my 64 GTO so that will be what I am installing next.
Thanks again Tom Hand. Tom Vaught

I used the 14" Race Pros on my 67 GTO fo about 8 years (they came with the 2.5" Pypes exhaust system I installed). I switched them out for the longer case Dynomax Super Turbos 17749 to get rid of the annoying drone. They work great, but may be too quiet for those who want a more aggressive sounding exhaust system. Inexpensive and easy to swap out, although if you have a shorter muffler now, it will require some trimming.

Another vote for Ultraflows..my car is quiet inside at 70mph..with 3 inch exhaust and 600hp. I have a video somewhere.

Walker Dyno Max Super Turbos have cured so many ills on our club members' cars. Has a low throaty idle that just never gets obnoxious as the RPM's increase.

5 or 6 PY members signed up to pay for part of the project costs (and it return would receive a set of stainless VOE mufflers). Tom and his people did a great job on the initial experiment. I believe are a couple of videos out there with the Vehicle equiped with the original Tom Hand VOE mufflers.
I assume the current guy making them worked a deal with Tom somewhere in the history and is not selling/"making" the mufflers. No knowledge of his later work. I have a set of the Tom Hand originals, Pontiac Jack has a set, and Tom Hand could maybe tell you who the others are IF they agree. Tom V.

Still around ?
Driver Controlled Exhaust (DCE) muffler For a brief period in 1969 & 1970, GTO buyers were able to purchase an option known as “Vacuum Operated Exhaust”. It was one of the industry’s most unusual options; dual-mode mufflers - controlled by the driver - that could be operated in “Quiet” or “Tiger” (Open) modes. http://waldronexhaust.com/drivercontrolledexhaust.htm .

Thanks Tom. I am building sets right now for the original GTO from the commercial. A set mainly the owner can use to drive the car with to save the original ones (priceless almost). The restored car is to be done by the MCACN show in Chicago this winter.
This round has been four sets, I did one set last year for a very rare and special 64 GTO in Michigan and then the other 6-8 sets or so out there were from 2003 to 2006. One of these is on my 69 Barracuda. They still work well and still sound great with zero drone but all sorts of roar when open. Here is one of the latest going on the "commercial" GTO. Once I saw the OEM ones and got more data, I changed the outlet side a bit to be more correct.

I was going to say pretty sure Waldron was still selling those switch operated mufflers. I also like his line of Imposter mufflers, that look stock, but offer more flow and sound. He builds to order so there is a 10-12 week waiting period. |

Waldron's has not been able to get what they need to sell them anymore. Not sure if or when they will be able to supply them again......

An overly loud exhaust on a convertible takes the pleasure out of driving one, even with the top up.
