Steering column collar fastener
'64 Lemans. What are the fasteners that hold the top piece to the steering column collar in? Don't have anything labeled for this in my parts, don't remember anything being there, but the part is loose. Is this put in before column? Because looks like a bitch to put nuts and bolts in there with column in place. Thanks for any insight here.

It has 3 pieces. I see 2 in your picture. the third is a hidden bracket that hold it all together. Easy to install when the dash is in place and the column is installed.

Andre, thanks for your reply. I do have the lower piece and hidden bracket and have put it in place. It does secure the top piece at the sides so it isn't going anywhere, but it is not tight and will clearly rattle if not further secured. I will find a way to secure it.

I recollect that there was a piece of foam or tape on some that I have taken apart, but I didn't use that one mine when I put it back together.

That's funny. I actually typed that I was thinking about putting a strip of Butyl tape in there but took it out thinking that I might get poop for taking a shortcut. I appreciate your feedback and info.

If I recall correctly - the tape/foam was a fix by Pontiac. I think it is in the restoration guide that there was a service notice to this due to complaints of rattling.

I just reread my service bulletin on this. ( Pontiac called them NEWS FLASH)
Pontiac's words are a bit slippery. First it says: Adhesive backed foam pads installed under the tabs of the upper cover by the assembly plants provide the anti-rattle requirement. Then it says: In cases where the foam pads have not been installed, make and install foam rubber pads from existing stock. |
