4 speed console , and my projects
Does anyone offer a cover for an original? All the vinyl has come off and just smooth plastic. Seems all that offered is a plastic textured console?
I just picked up a few parts cars plus a few more coming to build a few. Not restorations, just nice drivers. ive been around Py for awhile, so once i get going will be posting in here more often . I have a Limelight green auto 69 GTO and a Mayfair Maize 69 GTO, manual trans vinyl top car. I have my 68 GTO from high school that was wrecked. And lasty a 69 LeMans OHC 2dr auto

Lol, dont judge me too hard , considering i left this thing for dead 30 years ago and cut it up. At least its a Pontiac rear end lol. At the end of all this mess may have an extra frame to put under the 68

A uni-body front wheel drive 68 GTO could be the next big thing.
I guess the rear wheels will steer it like a forklift Good luck with her Bill ! Those consoles actually had some dashpad type foam material in some areas between the plastic and vinyl. Just Dashes is only place i have heard of who can recover/restore them. And it aint nuthin cheap about it. A good upholsterer can do them but they will have seams. Not so bad for good drivers. It's tricky and takes practice (emphasis on non-crucial practice parts) Paintable Gravel Guard in aerosol spray cans can be used to replicate the grain. You would need a good adhesion promoter on the plastic first. Then a primer coat Then light'ish coats of gravel guard Let it dry well Now the tricky part It takes just a small/medium amount of slow and easy sanding (more like wiping) with 180/220 grit dry paper to "knock down" the lumpy texture. Over-sanding in spots will leave smooth spots Under-sanding in spots will leave a "fake" look Sanded just right and evenly - it looks identical to the factory grain pattern used on that vintage of consoles and dashpads. After that is completed, use one or two medium coats of a primer-sealer , then 2-3 coats of your desired vinyl dye color. The primer-sealer will also show you your sanding results. If not satisfied - stop , and re-evaluate your course. If you aren't much of a paint & body guy - most likely will need several practice sessions to get the proper spray out technique nailed down , and a few sessions of the sanding technique. Can spray any type of semi-gloss black aerosol directly over your test pieces to see what your sanding results look like on your Practice Parts. Anything/surface can be used for practice parts. |

Bill, was your 68 originally an Orange color ?
They had an extra charge/special paint "Spring Color" called Carnival Red later on in 1968 that was Orange. But all the special paint cars had to get Chrome Noses / Endura Delete. |

No, Verdoro Green. Its more of a Grabber Orange than any Pontiac color.
I did find this Madrid fabric if it would be close enough? Did the original console have any seams at all? Im just wondering how this would lay down around the contours and bends as long as i set it out in the sun and got it nice and warm before laying it down. They make a latex based adhesive I believe would work. https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_m...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

If you ever sell it, someone can always either buy or get the console covered. A heat gun may help lay it down, um,,, the wife's hair dryer? I never said that btw. The tuff spots looks to be the radius at the shifter and the corners of the lid opening. You could split it, over lap it, and slice it at 45* before gluing it down nice and even. You should only have to split it at the top where it rolls over, very small seams. That would leave a seam but not too noticeable, depends on your expectations. Frank

http://www.justdashes.com/ From the name, you'd wonder, but I looked at their website and it shows consoles.

Consoles were done in a vacuum molding method just like the dashpads. Thats why places like JustDashes are the only ones who can do them back to the factory look - using the same production methods. You won't even get close trying to do it yourself with that vinyl material without cutting it into several pieces and having glued overlaps -- or seams. Its been tried by many others, many times. Drape a bed sheet over the whole console front-to-back completely just to get an idea. The vinyl material won't be anywhere near as forgiving as the bed sheet, but it will give you a reality check and idea of where you would have to cut and make glued overlaps - or seams. Have seen a few that were professionally recovered in vinyl. They had to cut the material into 4 pieces Top piece, 2 side pieces, 1 for the back At todays labor prices it would likely cost way more at most shops to recover it with the visible seams than to buy a repop. |

Looks like i'm getting yet another 69 GTO, manual trans Antique Gold, no console just trim ring on the floor. At least its has the seats in this one, frame under the doors is rotted, but have 2 other good frames at this point. Needs 1/4s, floors etc like the others. Will post pics when I get it home.

I've never seen in person a redone console but that photo of the just dashes console confirms what I'd expect... looks nice but just like the work they do on dashes it has a puffy look to it compared to factory. The radius of the edges are much too large and the flat surfaces look overstuffed.
Don't get me wrong it's still nice and better than most other solutions but the best option is NOS or nice used original.
