1968 Seats
I have 1968 seats I am thinking about selling
Its a long story but I had these fully rebuilt and recovered spending a ton of money Shame on me because afterwards I find out these are 68 seats. They now have 67 covers on them so I dot know if its better to sell as is or recover in 68 pattern ad then sell Any opinions for you 68 guys are welcome |

Isn't the only difference just the metal backs along with metal lower trim? I would likely source those and keep the '68 bucket seats.

Not really familiar Scott
Are you saying the lock release should be facing inwards? Passenger seat is a reclining seat too. Cable is moving but doesnt recline |

I was wondering about that ... if they had a recliner and thats how the 70-2 locks were on there ....
the 67-72 used the same recliner with a side button ... 66 had recliners also with no side release... the 66 67 had a unique chrome headrest receptickle .. 68 was just a color coded plastic cover ... 69 round button ... 70-72 like you have I would use your seats you have buy a new set of covers replace the upper covers with correct headrest hardware and pull the recliner latch/plunger and repair it ... while apart purchase 66-7 lower tin and 67 back tin youlle be fine ... darn it ,,,, |

69-72 did have center releases,if they DIDNT have a recliner
ALL 67-72 recliner seats had the basic same frames and used a side release on both seats here is a one year 66 and a 69 I have |

yes
more than likely if you replaced the headrest releases with a like part... the levers go towards each other under the headrest ,,, and latch on the outside of the 70 72 post 69 had a round knob and different notches on the post of the headrest ,, 1 year inside notches on posts I have seen some headrests with both sets of notches... 70-72 had out side edge notches and lever buttons as you have 68 had front notches and different again 1 year cover and release 66 67 had chrome cups and pointy headrests and interchanged I would need to do a tad bit of research to see if the top of the seat frame is the same to accept the 66 67 chrome cups .... maybe some one else may know .... I have a bare 69-72 seat and I have 66 67 nice headrest cups and 66 67 headrests but its all 10' up on a pallet rack |

If you remove the rear plastic covers, you should see the detent spring that locks the 68 style headrest posts like Scott Mentioned. I think it's possible to install later year locks on a 68 backrest even though they would never lock a 68 headrest & the screws are in a different spot. The 68 style plastic covers are not re-popped & pretty much impossibly to find, so I could see that being swapped out.
I might have pics of my seats when they were apart, but not 100% sure I kept them.

My 68 Seats have the Oval 68 Locks with deteriorated vinyl caps, having the seat color..
Bought Shiney repop caps (69?) and they didn't fit. Bummer. |

The 68's locks are weird. there is one detent on the top of the posts for the top cap springs, then three down inside the seat back. I never even knew that was different until I was assembling my interior. I had purchased a pair of mint headrests & had them in storage. It wasn't until I assembled my seats the I realized the locking positions were different & the headrests were slightly larger in 68. Rare option in 68 & then all 1 year parts. Needless to say I have the 68 seat parts, but 69+ style headrests that do not lock in the height positions. Nobody has noticed yet though so Sshhhhhhhh.

As far as those plastic caps go, I am stilling looking for a set. I ended up wrapping left over legendary vinyl over the metal backing & removed the retainers. Then left the screws exposed. IT actually looks ok, just not correct for those who know. but from the side it looks sorta like the original caps. One of those parts I would love to see repopped. Hopefully I will either find a nice set some day, or reproductions will come out.
RedDirtRoad, is that a strato reclining seat? I think all strato seats had headrests. Not sure about vise-versa tho.

While I never tried the chrome locks, I kinda made the assumption that removing those first two screws would allow them to work. I only did that 2 years ago, but I just don't remember exactly what was all in there......

Took pictures years ago comparing the 68 and 69 head rests. Used a white headrest for the 68, black is 69.
Have no experience with 67 though.

Pretty sure my 68' Stratobuckets with Headrests and recline are all original, except the 69 seat pattern i put on
