Cast aluminum intake repair With E 85
Hey everybody,
I have a cast aluminum intake that has porting damage for the port divider and wanted to know recommendations and suggestions for repair for use with E 85. I've moved to a rural area and have very limited repair resources so want to know How to do it right. Thanks again, Craig |

Splash Zone epoxy. Then cover the repair with some quality clear paint -- spray some into a paper cup and dab with a small touch up brush. Keep in mind uncatalyzed rattle can paint has a long cure time (2+ weeks) without baking. Best to use some 2k catalyzed paint and be sure to cover the edges.

The expansion and contraction of a Aluminum intake will in time crack off that clear paint and then the epoxy will start to break down.

Got that tip from Darin Morgan, I've used it a number of times and has held up well for me. I think the key is good paint. Of course, welding would be best.

I used Splash zone epoxy and then sealed off with POR 15 gas tank sealer. The sealer is good to 300 or 400 degrees. I can t remember what the specs were for heat capabilities, been awhile. Granted my setup is strictly race run times but has held up well with E85 over the past 4 years. Also I used it on my Gutsram which made it easy to flow it through the intake.

My experience has been welding is best for a permanent repair. I like splash zone, "Zspar specifically", but as mentioned, it must be sealed with something if running alcohol fuel. also the bonding surface needs to be left rough for best adhesion. If the alcohol fuel can wick it's way between the aluminum and the Zspar, it will swell slightly and begin to break off. Sealing is the key.

If you can get a TIG torch in there, that'd be the way to fix it. If ya wanna drive to St. Louis, I can fix it.

im only about an hour away from you & can recommend a couple very good machine shops in my town that im sure can do what you need or refer you to someone that can.

Curious what are some of the names of machine shops you can recommend?

i currently own some 2nd gen t/a's i have restored & used the same shop for all my engine work. a 78W72 (obviously). an 81 daytona pace car, & most recently finished a 72 firebird with a 467 stroker with round port E-heads that runs low 11's with a Q-jet & HO intake. i dont post much in the race section since its more of a street car but i have done quite a few test & tunes to see what it can do, still working out some issues to get its best times.
