W72 quadrajet
I recently scored a 1978 W72 intake manifold and carby. Im thinking the carby may be a good candidate for a rebuild to put on a current 455 project. The carby has a port on the front of it i have not seen before any body know what it is and if it will be an issue. the carby number is 17058263.

Itīs a float-bowl ventilation tube originally connected to the charcoal canister.
If no plan for using the canister just pull the tube off and thread hole for a NPT plug. |

That's gonna need a good level of recalibration to run well on a 455 so as to not have a stumbling ping monster on your hands, but it's a nice find none the less!

does that vent need to be plugged? i eliminated the charcoal canister on 2 of my cars & just leave the tube attached to the carb & open, dont notice any running issues & very little gas fumes/smell when parked.

I like to plug it avoiding fuel spillage at hard braking.

Another bigger reason to plug it is so that the fuel bowl only see's one air pressure source, that being the top fuel bowl vent sticking up thru the base of the air cleaner.

ok thanks, just curious if there was a reason to plug it as far as running or drive ability.
i do some pretty hard braking on my more spirited street driving but do very hard braking on low 11 second drag strip runs at 121+mph... never noticed any fuel spillage from that vent tube. |

Tell us about the original "recipe" and what needs to be done to the 17058263 unit to run well on a 455, aside from the obvious secondary rods.

EXCELLENT carb for a 455 build at nearly any power level but it looks more like a candiate for a restoration that a rebuild. I've had plenty in similar condition sent here over the years and more times than not they will be worse on the in side than on the outside.......

I offered up no suggestions precisely because of not knowing what cam might be used in the OPs 455 built, but for starters I would like to be able to take a guess as to what the level idle vacuum might be ball park wise so I can tell if the stock power piston spring will still cut it, or if it’s adjustment range will cover what might be needed.

The W72 group on Facebook you can sell that carb un-rebuilt easily for $400 + in decent shape or keep it and stick some 74's and 44k's in and and run it on the 455 !

Sorry to dig this thread up, but I am in need of a 17058263 carb. Did you still have this one? I am definitely interested, I need one for mine.

That's what freaked me out Bert, this is for my Macho T/A that had been around Melbourne, Victoria for the last 20 years, the intake and carb were changed for an Edlebrock one decades ago! I actually think that's the original intake and carb from my engine! I'm up in Sydney! I've sent you a message with my contact details!

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.
When I first rescued Macho T/A #46 from down in Melbourne, Victoria, the first thing I saw straight away was the rubbish Holley carb they threw on it and the aluminium intake on it. I had asked the owner what happened to the original carb and intake, and he said he might still have it, but he had the engine re-done over a decade ago and wasn't sure what happened to it. Either way, after I had brought the car and got it home, he didn't come up with those two. Decided well that's long gone, might as well look for another. Searched through FB Marketplace, a couple of those Quadrajet reco specialists, found some with extremely high price tags for date codes that didn't really match anyway. Two weeks ago I throw 17058263 into the search bar, here's Bert's post. I look at the pics and think jeez that really looks like it was pulled off my motor. Too bad the guy's probably in the United Sta-- wait, he's in MELBOURNE! What are the chances that a matching W72 intake and 4-speed W72 carb are here in Australia in the same city from where my T/A came from? Imagine if the date codes lined up, that could only mean.... Cut to today, and i'm just tearing the box open now to discover the original W72 4-speed carb from this Macho T/A in my hands. A spectacular thanks to Bonniebird for selling the carb, and while the intake may have gone missing before I had a chance to grab it, he has certainly given me some clues to track down where it went!

Nice story, I’ve seen this over the years with parts, cars…in a small poncho market…stuff goes in a circle and many times comes back .

I told Cliff what my .030 over 455 components ,CR , gears and what car it was going in and he sent me all the stuff to make my W72 carb run great, It also passed emissions here in NW Indiana
