Pontiac in a boat

I have 61 bueler turbocraft with a 292 ford that does not want to start. Considering putting a real motor in it. I have some pontiac water cooled manifolds I got off ebay but having problems locating other parts. Any Ideas.

Look around on this board for Steve Barcak, or go to his website at www.pontiacheaven.org (http://www.pontiacheaven.org) and leave him a message. He's real big into oddball and obscure Pontiac parts, and I believe he has a Pontiac powered ski boat, so he may be able to give you some advice.

Wow a Turbocraft, don't see too many of those. Can you still get pump parts? I have a 455 in my jet with a berkeley pump. I can't figure out how to post a pic. If you look hard enough you can find the mounts. Olds rear mount is the same, if you use a block mounted starter. Front mounts show up on e-rape once in a while-every thing else you gotta make yourself. I think that with a pump of that vintage, you may be disappointed with the performance of your boat when your done, but who knows. Specifically you would need: water cooled exhaust logs, front and rear mounts(either 3 point or four point, depending on your set-up) remote oiling system (filter housing won't clear the exhaust) flame arrester for carb, lots of marine grade water hose for cooling lines, an engine set up for marine use (forged parts, looser clearances), and other little odds and ends. An oil cooler is a good idea. A boat runs at high RPM all the time and it tends to heat the oil up if not cooled.

Tell me, how does the pont perform in your boat (compared to what it was born with). I am not looking for a lot of speed, but reliability.How much power does a 16 footer need? I was considering a 326, it now has a ford 292 truck. thanks

My boat performs well, runs about 75 mph (still looking for more). Turn key, real conservative engine, doesn't do any strange stuff, like chine walk, spin out, porpise, etc. It is a totally different breed than your buehler. It is a 79 Southwind 19 foot, and runs with most of the BBC powered lake boats, wins some, loses some. I can't comment on the past performance of it because I bought it w/o engine. As far as a 326 engine-It "might" be a good replacement for a 292 ford, probably heavier, so you have to think about hull strength, steering characteristics, ability to trim the boat properly and handling at speed. Remember, it IS a 1961. boats of that era were primarily running 35-40 mph, what happens at 50? Boat swaps ends when you let off the throttle, tosses you out, and sinks, I don't know. It took more work and money than I thought to put the pontiac in mine, but it was worth it in the end. Good Luck.
