I just picked up a 3.55 rear for my car and hope to have it in by this weekend. My previous best run is a 13.302 @ 101.82 MPH with a 3.08 rear. The car is heavy and clearly needs more gear to get out of the hole quicker. My best 60 ft. with no spin is only a 1.92.

Any guesses as to how swap will affect ET and speed? I will be running the car at the FAST Drags at E-town on Saturday so I'll know for sure in a few days. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

1969 Lemans convertible, 462, 10:1 compression, 96 heads Milled but otherwise stock, Summit 2802 cam, Q-jet, stock intake. TH400, 2500 stall converter. 4050 lbs. race weight.

Yeah, it's starting to get pretty cold up here too, was 65 yesterday though! http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Bringing plenty of warm clothes on Satuday.

The converter is a Hughes GM25. Been very happy with it so far.

What rpm are you going through the traps with the present gearing and tires?

goatless
11-08-2004, 05:15 PM
Somewhere around 4000 RPM, don't know exactly.
I tried keeping it in 2nd one time, went through the traps about 6200 RPM, lost about a 10th and 1 MPH.

Sounds like the 3.55's would be a big help getting your car to go through the traps at or closer to your redline. Not to mention you're still trying to determine the best launch technique etc...
I think 12's are in your near future!

grandville455

Your convertor must have been slipping some When i had my 2.93's I would go through at about 5500 in second...But that was a stock convertor too.It will be interesting to see what happens with the gear change, but weather will be a factor especially if its cool...A true test is back to back but that isnt possible..

Jeremy,
Let's be sure and put my GTECH in your car on Saturday.

The data logging will help.

RPM shift points / trap / launch
G Force in each gear / launch

Back to back comparisons.

Not enough people are data logging IMO. Either invest in the technology, or mount a video camera behind your shoulder.

Phil it seems you are running the twin to my last engine, dished pistons? I had the 670's ported by JBP, ran the same cam but a Torker II with an 850, I was getting between 12.1 and 11.7 with 4.11 gears in a 3500lb 79 Brid. What times you getting with that setup?

And no I dont recomned going to the lower gear, it picked up with 3.42's, then chucked a rod.

Todd - my best run to date is a 11.92 with a bog off of the line (1.8 60'). No dish to the pistons so I'm around 12:1. So far I'm also using 1.5 rockers but am changing to 1.65's this week. I'm still trying to dial in my new 950HP. My GTO weighs 3525. Once I get rid of the bog off the line I'm hoping to get down to 11.70. I love this cam man!

You don't mention the tires you are currently running. More gear = less traction off the line = worse 60' = worse 1/4. One change always affects another piece of the puzzle.

I did not have the results I expected going from 3.55s to 3.90s. Only After I changed the cam and tires did I benefit. I run a 400ci in a 3925lb car and have struggled to get in the 12s

If you can retain the perfect traction you now have....you could run a little better in the 1/4. I would not expect huge gains.......unless your combo was way off to begin with.

just my 2 cents....

good luck

Well, the whole thing is a moot point now. While cleaning up the rear for install I discovered more rust on one of the spring perches than I thought was there. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I don't have time to do a proper repair and get the rear in the car by Saturday.

This idea of swapping rears was kind of a spur of the moment thing. My car is already running faster than I thought it would or even should! It's not a race car, it's the family cruiser. After all it's a heavy convertible with A/C, running highway gears and log manifolds!

The last time at the track it took me by suprise with the times it was turning and well, you know how it is... I just wanna go a little faster. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif This was just gonna be an experiment to see how much more it would do. The rear was just going to come out again after so the car could return to family cruiser duty in the Spring.

I may still try this out come Springtime. I'll keep you posted.

I am still going to run this Saturday with the 3.08's. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Mchell, I've got a set of 235/60 ET Street Radials that I think would still hold with more gear. Maybe we'll find out in the Spring. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I've cut a few low 1.5 60's but still can't get this barge in the air. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Going to knock off about 150-175 pounds off nose this winter..........just maye some air under tires.......just for kicks!!!Of course triming a couple of tenths off ET is the goal. Hope to be in high 11's next season.
Damn a bunch of winter.

thanks - not bad for a stock replacement clutch! I'm going to install my freshly redone clutch form RAM this winter and wondering whether to go with an aluminum flywheel??

60man
11-11-2004, 06:39 AM
Phil: I had a aluminum flywheel in a 62 Cat and it was miserable to drive on the street. Had to feather clutch or drop the hammer just to get it moving. Had 3.64 gears and wide ratio 4-speed.I would not be tempeted to use one unless car was light, had stiff gears, & was race only. Just my .02 worth. Not an expert but that was my take on my experience with a aluminum flywheel.

I appreciate your input Troy! That's the kind of hands on info I need. Even Mike at RAM had his doubts on me using/needing one.

Thanks

You're quite welcome buddy. It is a whole lot of rotating weight to remove but..............

I have run aluminum flywheels in several street cars (all lightweight cars, and all with manual transmissions). The boost in acceleration is unbelievable until experienced. HOWEVER, idle is rough and high. Pontiac 350 will idle at about 1000, but just barely (of course the RA IV cam doesn't help the idle http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif). Starting from a stop means slipping the clutch slightly or dropping the hammer. The Pontiac has a 3.08 rear, but FIA transmission with 3.46 first gear. It also weighs less than 3000 pounds (how much under is classified http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif). The other vehicles were import 4-bangers and I ran anything from 3.89 (didn't work well at all) to 5.13 rear gears.

Would I do it again? YOU BETCHA http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif BUT ONLY WITH MANUAL TRANS!

Maybe OMT will weigh in, as he has a car with similar weight to yours and has run the aluminum flywheel. He posted his experience with it some time ago.

6567GTO
11-11-2004, 02:27 PM
Thanks Jon. The car weighs 3525 w/o driver. Whatcha think?

JYD - One thing I remember OMT saying is that his tires spun real easy on the street with the aluminum flywheel. He had to be careful. To tell you the truth, mine does that now. Not sure how much of a benefit it'll be at the track with one. I've got Seal Power forged pistons and Crower rods which adds up to a pretty heavy rotating assembly.

Crossbreed 455 - I'll do that. I've been working my way up little by little.

6567GTO - No comment on how it will work for you. I have not had an aluminum flywheel in anything nearly so heavy as your unit. I simply do not know.

The car I had the most experience with weighed 1910 lbs. Still dialing in the 1974 GTO which weighs quite a bit less than 3000.

For me, they work great; but I detest dogmatic transmissions. I would still have manuals, even if the dogmatics ever get better than manuals (not in my lifetime http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). I really don't mind shifting; and (knock on wood http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) have had remarkable reliability out of clutches (far more reliable than dogmatic transmissions). Take this paragraph into consideration when you read my comments.

I didn't end up going. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

We got a couple inches of snow http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif the night before. The roads up here were nice and messy, sand, SALT and slush. So I wussed out.

They did have the event though, no snow in NJ. I wish I went, it's going to be a long winter.

Gonna have to wait until spring. Time to pack it away for the winter. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
