I'm looking at a 1979 T/A. I need to know if it is an original motor and if it is the Pontaic motor. Any help ?
Thanks

If the car still has the original motor you can narrow down the motor by whether the car is an auto or 4-speed. All 400s were 4-speeds in 1979. If the car is an automatic it is either going to be a 301 or 403. The 301 can easily be identified by "01" heads and a single plane intake. The 403 has a "flat" intake with a fill tube coming out of the front of the intake. Of course you could look at the shaker identifications: 6.6 T/A = 400, 4.9 T/A = 301, 6.6 litre = 403. From your question I am going to guess you are not sure what a pontiac looks like so here is a pic.

'79 Pwh 400 has block VIN stamped up by the Pwh stamping, very easy to read.

You can tell if it's a Ols 403 engine by the oil filler is right above the water pump.
