I know that this is not a popular thing with the pontiac purists but considering $$$. Seems like its far cheaper to convert to chevy. I just wanted to ask if anyone out there has converted a 69 A-body to a chevy and what did it take to get the motor in?

Don't worry about what is the popular thing to do. Do what YOU want to and what makes YOU happy. A Chevy engine can be cheaper to build, it can also be more expensive, it just depends on what your ultimate goal is. As for installing a Chevy into your 69', you will need the corresponding parts from a Chevelle of the same era. For example, you will need a Chevy pattern transmission/bell housing, motormounts, wiring, etc...

Would this conversion require any welding? or are the chevelle frames and Lemans frames the same?

Frames should be pretty much the same if not identical. Shouldn't require any welding, just the correct brackets and mounts etc...

All u need is the chevy motor mounts for a chevelle and I think these are readly available from chevelle restorers. U will need a motor with all the accessories and brackets that u r car has. Starter wiring is simple just lengthen the wires and move the battery over to the other side. Carb linchage from aftermarket and trans kick down bracket from the same. Unless u have a coporate trans {dual mount pattern} u will have to change the trans and it is a bolt in if u get same trans as u have or u will have to get a different yoke and lengthen drive shaft. I think that u will find that if u have a cood core motor for u r Indian after u buy all the extra parts it will probably be cheaper to stay with a Pontiac motor and u will loose a lot of torque {that kick in the a** feeling when u ta}ke off unless u use a large size bigger block I did this conversion on my GTO in 1973 to 75 and I had a complete car{68 Caprice 427 4 speed} to do the change over. That is the way to do the change over.

You do not have to get a new transmission. Jegs/ summit sells adaptors plates so you can use for the tranny. I think mine costed $40.

All you need to do is use Chevy frame mounts and a different tranny, the holes in the frame will match up perfect. You can buy a tranny from Pick a Part for less than $50.00. Don't let them pull that Pontiac has more torq number on you. A Chevy 350 with a set of Vortec heads will put you right into the torq range of a Pontiac 400 and it's a lot cheaper to build, you can buy a brand new set of Vortec heads for less than $500.00 that will out flow a set of stock D port heads. It really is cheaper and there are a lot more parts to choose from.
