I am posting this question here, because this forum seems to get the most traffic, and I would like as many responses as possible. My question is; what would be a realistic value for a 1968 Catalina convertable? I have located one that is completely original, including the paint. The body is perfectly straight, and the only flaws are two small rust holes in the 1/4's by the wheels. The car is SOLID, is equiped with the original 400 2brrl, and the interior is PERFECT, with the exception of the carpet being faded. This car is definately a survivor. Now, I could purchase this car for $6,800.00. Does this sound reasonable? I can do the bodywork and paint myself, but I dont know what this car would be worth in an honest 2.5 condition, after its been given a little love. I would plan on keeping the car for a while, but is there much demand for this car if I decide to sell? I cant remember the last time I saw a 68 Catalina on the road here in San Diego, much less one thats a convertable. I think its got a pretty good "cool" factor, for that reason alone. Also, what would it take to convert it to front disc brakes? All replies, advice, and info are appreciated. Thanks.

6800 doesnt sound too bad but dont plan on getting rich off of it when you go to sell. Very nice original big converts might bring $10K at a big auction

i would say that if you could get it for $5,000 and were able to do all of the work yourself , you may stand to make $1,000-$2,000 on it. the big cars usually top out at the $8,000-$10,000 mark. you have to remember the cost of equipment and supplies to get it to that point also. i have found that cars always look better in someone else's driveway, meaning when you get it home ,you will find more flaws than expected.

Resale value in my opinion is not the guage you should use and I should know as I got 3 times resale value invested in mine. I got other cars but my full size Bonneville muscle car is my favorite for many reasons. 1. I like the way it looks and I don't see myself coming and going like you do with older CHevvys and FOOrds. 2. My big bonne hauls the mail and always surprises others with its performance. 3. I like the way it drives compared to other older muscle cars. These reasons are why I put adult money into mine that I will never get back and that's fine with me as I don't plan on selling it!

Hey Pvan,
No Fords or Chevy's for me. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif You know, I have never actually driven an older B body Pontiac, so I will ask you, what is it that you like better about it over an A body, for example. I drove a 71 lemans for the first time in years, a couple weeks ago, and I realized how uncomfortable it was. i dont know, I just think there is something cool about late 60's Cats and Bonn's. Lots more room for the driver? Give me your honest review.

Your right about Goats and even Birds being small and uncomfortable. The only advantage to the smaller cars in my opinion is the weight advantage for drag racing.

Big old full size Pontiacs are heavy, comfortable to drive, all the 2 doors look in my opinion way better then the smaller cars due to the long and wide lines, and when you work the suspension over and drop em down a couple inchs front and rear, have fat meats, they handle. Plus being lowered with the top down is a look no other light weight can duplicate.
I have over 600 hp on command so I can turn my rig into a light weight anytime I want.
I'm partial to the 69 but ANY 60's big Pontiac is way cooler then all the other smaller cars.
My car's name is B1-BOMR
