Hi! First post here! I just cant decide what cam to use!
Looking for maximum streetable HP with my spring to be setup:

455" 030 overbore
Stock crank reground and checked
Scat H-beam 6.625" bushed 2.250" rods
Clevite bearings ~.0025 gap
Melling hi-volume oil pump
TRW L2359F-30 pistons
stock piston rings
Edelbrock SP2P (early performer) intake, Torker II or Edelbrock performer RPM
Comp magnum roller tip rockers 1.52 or 1.65
Rhoads lifters?
Quadrajet 800
True roller timing gear
Cam will be graded to specs.
6X-4 or 7K3 heads, mildly ported and port matched. Hopefully outflowing stock heads? No problem milling to a desired compression.
Valves depending on cam, should fit original installed height, Want to spend minimal cash on the heads, since aluminum heads are coming in 2006/2007

Dacco converter approx 2000 stall? (very mild)
TH350 prepped to take the punishment
3.42 rear gears
M/T ET street 26/10.5-15

Current setup is totally stock -76 455" except
030 bore
Edelbrock SP2P intake
TRW TP190 cam. Lift 420/443 dur 278/288 @ .006 SAE lift
6X-4 heads port matched

Pulled 302HP/553lb.ft on the rolls
Drove 13.451/100 this summer, could shave a couple of tenths, but i had 99% grip! Full throttle of the line!!
Looking to add 100-200HP since the torque never leaves a 455"! Eventually another additional 150-300HP on the button... we´ll see http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Almost forgot... Engine is pulling a stock -76 Firebird

Good time for mild combo. One thing is are you looking for a cam to match what you have head wise now or one that will work now, but really come alive with the later planned Alum. heads?

Change the manifold to a Performer when you add a Crower 60919 cam with Rhoads lifters. Tunnel Port has Tri-Y headers available for the D Port/auto configuration right now. Pypes 2.5 X-pipe or X-change system with Dynomax ultra-flows. This cam is a little much for your stall/gear combo but should work fine with your future head swap assuming you are looking at KRE's heads.

That SP2P is a museum piece! They were "popular" for a short time. Turned out to be a bust. T-2 is the better choice for your large cube combo. There was one guy out here asking about building a towing motor for his truck. HE might want that SP2P...
Comp XE274H is right up your alley. We use it in a lot of street engines, always with good results. It sports parameters similar to 041 (Ram Air IV), but has XE technology, providing better "manners" and a broader power band.

No, i dont think its expensive to buy a new cam. I want maximum HP with current heads, they will be mildly home-ported, so i dont have any flownumbers yet.

Yes, i have had my eyes on this crower 60919 (RA IV remake, right?) But after talking to another pontiacer, longer valves will be needed for accurate springs (and 1.65 rockers) And i feel like its money in the ocean with aluminum heads coming. And if im realistic: My heads will not be flowing the numbers the RA IV cam needs.

Yes! very nice cam, but wont i have the same problem here, with stock installed height springs? Are there springs that is about 115lbs@1.586 and 340@1.086? and can take approx .500 lift?

IF you get the drop in Crane springs to use with the Comp or Crower cams, they would be fine as long as you use a 1.5 ratio rocker arm. That would be the cheapest way spring wise I know of without spending a bunch on something that is only to be used a short time.

What is a drop in crane spring? P/N?

Thanks! I found som trw/femo exhaust valves at work today! 5.08" tall when measured, listed as 5.09 i belive? No intakes, but maybe price will be affordable, for the extra travel, to order some? Ill see monday.

Anyway, follow-up Q: To keep valvtrain geometry, should the pushrods be as much longer as the valve? For instance: if the valve goes from 4.9" to 5.1" should the pushrod be 0.2" longer?

with that long of valve u will need taller springs i believe

...But it won't do anything to your retainer-to-seal/guide clearance, though. It's alot cheaper to check upfront, than to repair later.
